“LOWER THE RATE OR I’LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT, which the U.S. Supreme Court, in its ridiculous and very costly Tariff decision, strongly acknowledged ‘the President’ has an absolute right to do,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “IT’S BETTER THAN TARIFFS! The Fed Board, with its great new leader, must get smart – BE PATRIOTS for a change. High interest rates put the U.S.A. at a very unfair disadvantage, and I won’t allow that to happen!”Trump’s demand is not only corrupt and impeachable but also exceptionally stupid.
Suspending trade with countries that the U.S. has a trade deficit with would, to put it lightly, nuke the economy.
The U.S. is heavily dependent on imports for everything from machinery parts and electronics to pharmaceuticals and oil. That gives us deficits with major trading partners like China, Canada, Mexico, and the European Union, among many, many others.
Suspending trade with those countries would singlehandedly and literally decimate the economy. For instance, if trade were suspended, the United States could not quickly produce a great many of the goods it depends on, surely leading to grim shortages.

The food scarcity begins almost immediately if somehow, magically all trade stopped. We import a majority of our fresh fruit and about a third of our fresh vegetables, with most of those imports coming from Mexico. That alone is a deal breaker for halting all foreign trade.
Sure, talk about importing machinery or electronics or pharmaceuticals if you want, but risking the food supply is something people will see immediately at grocery stores in terms of both availability and sudden massive price hikes.
Trump will make sure there is plenty of chocolate covered cotton to eat. And everyone owns a share.
