Specifically, around 26% of eligible voters were sufficiently evil, stupid, irrational, or pig-ignorant enough to vote for the orange turd. Of course only 26% (okay, a marginally larger 26%) stirred themselves to vote against him.

These numbers will vary wildly by region, of course. For example in my county 55% of voters went for Trump. Yay.

This is how the US has always been. Bitterly culturally divided. Things may have appeared better on their face back when we had civility in politics, but the cultural rift in this country predates the US Civil War. As someone who grew up around KKK-country, there is nothing about Trump’s election that contradicts my previous understanding of the nation.

This is true, but it ignores the fact that we have had opportunities to bridge the racial and cultural divide, and we’ve had opportunities to do better in terms of economic parity. We failed.

The part that shocked me is how suddenly open people were willing to be about their baser natures to the point they were willing to back someone who is essentially Biff from Back to the Future. We have a culture that has long celebrated ruthlessness in the interest of success and self-aggrandization. Trump is just the natural consequence of our making heroes out of bullies.

Trump is a natural consequence of our collective ignorance and tolerance of people who abuse power, and more specifically, people who use their economic leverage to corrupt our institutions. Trump wasn’t the canary in the coal mine – he was the fucking mine explosion. The canaries came before 2016.

You appear to be judging an entire country based on one voting bloc. We aren’t a monolithic entity. We aren’t even split in two as our two-party system suggests. We are hundreds of different cultural attitudes, ideas and experiences.

Like other countries are monoliths. The point is, other democratic societies are better educated and have safeguards that have protected against such corruption.

That’s true, but other countries are in large part buying into populism because our country had a lot to do with their loss of faith in economic cooperation. We fucked up the financial system in 2008. We initiated a disastrous war in 2003 that destabilized North African and the Near East – which also created ISIS and the refugee crisis in Europe. To top it all off, we’re not only not apologetic about any of this mass disruption, we basically grab our balls and tell the whole world to suck it while we vote for a nationalist who tears up international environmental and economic agreements.
