How late am I? Very, very late: Weeds (open spoilers)

I watched the season as it progressed until the last 3, when life overtook TV time. When my daughter came home for winter break, we sat down and watched the whole season. I’ve got two things to say about it-- right after the rollover spoiler space. . .

  1. Doug cannot be dead. He’s the funniest part of the show. Well, him and Andy. We didn’t actually see him jump, did we?

  2. Nancy bought herself some time but when that baby is born black. . … We get to see Conrad again!

Mmmm…Conrad… Huh? What? Sorry, daydreaming.

I don’t think we actually saw Doug jump. I see him chickening out.

I love this show, but if we see one more Shane-jacking-off-to-Nancy’s-picture scenes, I’ll be giving up on it. shudder

As for Nancy with the baby…what if it’s Andy’s?? I mean, Nancy seemed really comfortable letting him in to the room while she was naked in the bath.

There’s no way Doug is gone. You can’t kill off one of the best characters!!!

No, no… Doug wasn’t committing suicide, he was engaged in autoerotic asphyxiation! I just got totally caught up in this show and watched all four seasons in the span of a few months, so I am now ready to resurrect this thread and hopefully get some good discussion with fellow Weeds addicts as we await Season 5.

“Black people never get arrested!”-- Doug

Also to the OP: the timeline on the show is kind of unclear, but it seems like too much time must have passed for the baby to be Conrad’s. Of course, maybe she isn’t really pregnant at all. I still think she is in a tough situation; the Mayor may want to keep her alive until the baby is born, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll be free or comfortable. I suspect he may be carried away by his emotions and decide to forgive her, which may prompt a mutiny from his troops. And it also seems like only a matter of time until Captain Till figures out she lied and tries to make good on his vow to kill her.

Nobody?:frowning:

I just realized last night, starting to re-watch Season 4, that the whole narrative arc of the series really changed in Season 3, as Nancy went completely bonkers. In the first two seasons, she certainly made some dubious decisions, but her actions always had some sort of reasonably rational and obvious motives, and she was unquestionably the most sensible person in her own family.

In Season 3, she started hanging out with U-Turn and, I think, got hooked bad on adrenaline; her criminal behavior stopped being a means to support her family and became an end in itself. I can’t imagine the Nancy of the first two seasons impulsively deciding to burn down her house and run away to join the circus (and by “circus”, I mean “Mexican Mafia!”).

In Season 4, she just seems to be trying really hard to get killed, first going down the tunnel to look for kicks when she already has the financial stability that she had been seeking, and then deciding she’s going to snitch out Guillermo while trying to maintain a relationship with the Mayor (can’t remember his name). Meanwhile, as she has become more irresponsible and immature, her other family members have shown real growth. El Andy has developed some morals, sticking his neck out to help oppressed immigrants, and Silas just wants to find a nice girl to settle down with and start a small business. OK, they’re both totally committed to criminal lifestyles, but they’re both way saner than Nancy at this point, and their discussion in the season finale indicates that they’re starting to realize that. Shane is clearly having some issues, but even he isn’t pulling the kind of blatantly crazy shit that his mother is, and at least he no longer sees dead people.

I will be interested to see how this goes in Season Five; will Nancy make some kind of turnaround, or can they find yet lower points for her to sink to? If not, how long will the rest of the family keep putting up with her? And is she going to hook up with Andy??

Whatever happens, I hope there’s no recurrence of the sort of graphic violence we saw in the torture scene in the pentultimate episode of Season 4; that gave my poor wife nightmares. The show walks a narrow line in that it keeps you hooked by putting the characters in danger, but it’s basically a comedy, so nothing really bad can ever happen to them. I feel that it’s starting to have a problem with this, but obviously I’m still eager to see what happens next!

Doug’s suicide note is also only minimally different from the suicide note left by Brooks in the Shawshank Redemption. So even his “suicide” note wasn’t remotely sincere, it was stolen from a movie.

Yeah, not being remotely sincere is Doug’s whole MO. He’s very funny and charismatic, but periodically he reminds us that he is, in fact, a complete narcissistic asshole. He is another character whose life seems to be circling the drains, I hope he manages to pull out of it.
