Weeds Season 5 Discussion Thread (OPEN SPOILERS)

Anyone else watching this?

It was nice to see everyone again, but I can’t say I thought the season opener was a classic. It seems they were getting everything into position for the season, but there weren’t a whole lot of laughs (although I cracked up when Nancy reminded Silas to take sunscreen on his dope planting expedition, and also several times at Doug’s general clueless, deadpan Douginess).

The show has definitely moved far away from the “madcap adventures of a small time pot dealer” concept it started with, the stakes seem to keep getting higher and the risks more serious. Was the forced gyne exam the first time we have ever seen Nancy cry?

I am wondering how this storyline will pan out, it seems Esteban is not likely to forgive her for her betrayal and once she gives birth he will have no real incentive to keep her alive. I would be inclined to vote for Andy’s plan to flee the country, but now it appears she is being followed by Cesar (hopefully on Esteban’s orders, I would definitely check that out right away if I were her). Looks like next episode we get to see more of Guillermo, which I like although I can’t imagine what they are going to have to say to each other.

The whole “flashmob” scene seemed like a waste of time to pad the episode out to 29 minutes.

Shane continues to rock, his scene with his teacher was great. I am sorry he will have to leave his two skanky girlfriends (and am not really sure why Nancy is sending him away and not the rest of the family), but it is probably best that he be far away when Silas realizes he has been stealing his pot! I can only imagine what a piece of work Nancy’s sister will turn out to be…keeping in mind that she chose to turn to Bubbe for help rather than her sister last season!

So although the season opener wasn’t great, I still have high hopes for the rest of the season (see what I did there?;). Please share your thoughts as this is really the only show I watch and I have nothing else to talk about.

I really liked it, but I would agree that nothing really happened, and it felt kind of like treading water. I loved everybody not even entertaining the idea of paying ransom for Celia, though. It was great, and easily the highlight of the episode.

That was pretty funny! It also provided a nice mechanism for checking in with the characters who weren’t otherwise in the episode. Looks like she may be staying with Rodrigo for a while…it will be interesting to see how that plotline develops. Maybe she will become involved with some other Mexican gang and be able to provide protection for Nancy somehow?

Glad to see the show back - this wasn’t one of the best episodes but there were some good moments - nobody wanting to pay ransom, can’t even sell her organs…plus I think Nancy will find a way to get out of this. Wonder if they are going to fast forward this season to her giving birth in the season finale?

I just discovered Weeds and watched all the seasons on Netflix, so I only had like a week to wait for Season 5 to start. That was fun. But it was hard to only watch one episode on Monday. Agreed, the Celia ransom thing was hilarious. The thing about Celia is that she has these flashes of sanity and then she goes back to being such a horrific bitch. But maybe she will get truly nicer if she actually gets and stays clean? She is so good at this role. With half of my brain I remember being surprised when Genji said in a commentary, “Elizabeth is so good here.” What, Celia’s not real? I know this is from last season, but I love the fact that Shane made himself cool at his new school. The geek triumphs! And Nancy…oh what a trainwreck. I know she’s an anti-hero or else I would shoot her myself. She makes me sick the way she could have gone back to being a real mom and managing a store while making tons of money. Who wouldn’t love that? And she could have actually been a mom. Of course there’d be no show. But still. Am I the only one who is really getting sick of Doug? Is it just me or did he used to be a lot more likeable? I remember hating Andy at first – when he was impersonating Silas and IM’ing his girlfriend – and now I love Andy. He has stepped up bigtime. Anyway, I am babbling. As mentioned in another thread, is it possible this baby is Conrad’s? And what are they (the writers) going to do with the baby?

I keep saying that baby is going to be born black but how much time passed in the last season? Because the last time Nancy and Conrad hit it was back in season 3.

My how Shane has grown! And you would think her children would relish a little stability in their lives and run to their aunt’s house.

Watching Esteban being a sadistic bastard made me positive that he’s gonna die. Some how, some way Nancy will make that happen. Either by her own hand (she has killed before) or through some weird circumstance. Perhaps gay DEA guy will get his revenge. But then I thought, would he be a good Nancy’s-Match sort of re-occurring character? Baldy could die but Esteban lives, always one step behind Nancy-- loving her and hating her at the same time.

Basically the same here, but I DVDd 'em and was able to finish season 4 and immediately fire up the first season 5 ep.

I used to feel sympathy for Nancy but now I just laugh at her. She’s insane, and I’ll be surprised if anyone survives being anywhere around her.

I missed the season opener. I’m relieved to see that, according to comments, this was not a jaw-dropping episode.

Am I the only one who misses the “Little Boxes” openers from the first season(s)?

I wouldn’t think so. Off the top of my head, it felt like she was screaming and crying (underwater, in the pool) at the time she was getting blackmailed by U-Turn.
e Regarding the season opening, it didn’t really work for me. But itmight’ve been that I’ve been watching a lot of Sopranos lately and all other shows start to feel lame in comparison.

Well, Episode Two was a real love/hate thing for me. I’m going to ask the Mod to put “Open Spoilers” in the title of this thread, but pending that, I’ll just say that, dating to last season, two of the last four episodes have gone way over my personal line for graphic violence.
This trend is going to need to stop if I am going to keep watching. I also think that they have now definitively established that Esteban is just plain scum, and I certainly hope there will be no further effort to ambiguate that. I think Nancy should have run for the hills when she had the chance, and hope that she does so next time. However, she does stupid, self-destructive things, in case you hadn’t noticed.

OTOH, this episode definitely brought the funny in a way that was lacking in Episode One. I about died laughing when Celia organized the guerrilla’s arsenal! Cesar’s deadpan “Well, I also support gay marriage” was also absolutely priceless. That sort of thing will definitely keep me watching even if I have to cover my eyes at times and don’t sleep too well afterwards.

Any idea how/why Guillermo summoned Nancy to visit him? He didn’t seem to have much to say other than that he thinks she ratted him out, which wasn’t too hard to figure out. Great acting scene, though – he just oozed malice!

He didn’t summon her - she just showed up to get it over with; either kill me or set me free. She is tired of living in limbo. She didn’t, however, get the results she had hoped for and still doesn’t know where she stands exactly (although she certainly understands where she bends).

And MoodIndigo1, yes - I think you are the only one who misses the song “Little Boxes”. I hated that song when it first came out and would always fast-forward the opening so I wouldn’t have to hear it again - even if it was sung by others in slightly different formats.

Perhaps she visited Guillermo to get some insight into how to handle the situation with Esteban. I think he scared her into reality when he suggested where she could end up. Perhaps one option for her is testifying against Esteban, and hoping that the witness protection program can hide her well enough. But that would kind of end the pot dealer-mom plotline, so I don’t think that’s how they’ll go. Perhaps as someone suggested, Quinn’s boyfriend will take down Esteban’s gang.

You’re confusing Esteban with Guillermo.
As far as the actual topic, episode 1 was pretty funny at parts and kept me interested. episode 2, not so much. I wonder where they’re gonna go from here.

Yeah, me too. I hated it before it was the theme song, hated it as the theme song and am glad it’s gone.

Two episodes in, and season 5 hasn’t grabbed me yet. I’ll give it time. We’ll see. Liked the sister in-law very much. Always like Andy stuff.

That was Estaban. G had someone leave the bobble-head Jesus statue (the one that had a hidden camera in it during her first border crossing) for her to find, and it had a note on it that said “I miss you Blanca, come see me now.”

As for why he wanted to see her, it looked like for no reason other than to tell her she’s doomed. I liked Guillermo, but his craaaaaazy bad guy act was a little over done, IMO.

Since they no longer live in ‘little boxes’, the song no longer fits.

It was me who thinks the DEA agent may do Nancy’s dirty work. Who knows, he may hook up with Nancy’s former gayer than a handbag full of rainbows former seller. They can do an On The Road type storyline.

To the person who said ‘I don’t know where they’ll go with this’-- have faith. I’ve said that at least 5 times during the last 5 seasons and the writers always come through in totally surprising ways. So go ahead and disregard any predictions I may have.

I didn’t see it this week. Totally forgot. Will watch it On Demand.

But remember that last season, Capt. Till told her that he would kill her if he ever discovered that she hadn’t told him all she knew the first time he asked her, so I think going to the authorities would be very dangerous for her. Although knowing Nancy, I can totally see her going into witness protection and continuing to sell weed in her new identity!

I am guessing that we are headed for a confrontation between Quinn’s-ex-whose-name-I-can’t-remember’s crew and Esteban’s gang. Maybe Nancy will end up having to beg for mercy from Celia, in a role reversal from last season!

And apropos of nothing: I hope we get to see more of Isabella.

I thought the Michael Franti song at the end of the premiere was perfect. It was great. It’s a great album.

Overall, I thought the episode was ok. I mean it is the first one though, so you gotta have a little set up for what’s to come.

Since this is now a consolidated season thread, can it be made closed spoilers?

Well, I just asked the mod to put “open spoilers” in the title because I thought it would be more fun that way. Any other opinions? Should we do a different thread for each episode? What happened to all the cheese?
