You sure about that?
OK, I’m sorry I opened this can of worms. I was just disgusted and horrified by that Taliban proclamation.
It was late at night and I did not express myself very clearly. I am not for a moment suggesting that the majority of muslims are terrorists.
Right now I am having a close read through the Koran to try to see what it actually says about religions other than Islam.
OTTOMH
We Jews are cousins to Muslims and ‘the first people of the book’. We are to be treated like actual cousins.
On the other hand
IIRC when the day of judgement comes, ‘every rock and tree will shout "Hey! There’s a perfidious Jew hiding here! Come and slay him!’

By which I mean, al Quran says a lot of things depending on who you go by- just like most sacred texts. AFAIK, there are calls to destroy idols and scorn idolators. There is nothing saying members of the 3 Abrahamic faiths shouldn’t live together in peace.
Pretty sure the bit about the talking trees isn’t actually in the Koran, but in some post-Koranic commentary.
Could be. I stand by my larger point. There’s nothing saying Abraham, Avram and Ibrihim shouldn’t get along.
Oh, those fargin bastages. Iceholes, the lot of them.
I’m genuinely curious how conversant (hehe) you are with India. Hindi isn’t the be all you seem to think it is. Not everybody in the country speaks Hindi as either the first or second language.
Next, ISTR another American or Canadian here of Indian descent. He posted a lot of bigoted nonsense. Mind you, there are other posters of Indian descent who have not posted your bigoted nonsense, but you really do remind me of one of the trolls who did.
I’m skeptical any of what he’s actually claimed is true. Describing oneself as a “brown Hindu” just hits my ear wrong. I could absolutely 100% be mistaken on this, but unless he’s got a lot of deep buried self-esteem issues I have a hard time believing an actual Hindu would describe themselves that way.
Oh, no worries. I don’t believe him either. But it’s bugging me I can’t recall the name of the other troll who purportedly was of Indian descent.
I have vague memories of that as well. I also cannot remember the name of that poster unfortunately. I did a quick search on the board for threads where Hindu and Islam are both brought up, but as I’m sure anyone can imagine that covers a lot of ground. Skimming the threads I found, no one jumped out of me. I might go back later and look some more.
I don’t disagree, but do think that there are also more attacks on anti-LGBT mainstream Christians than there are on anti-LGBT mainstream Muslims.
And I think Velocity may be right about why. The countries in question have Christian majorities or pluralities, and thus the anti-LGBT non-extremist Christians are more of a personal threat. And, most of the time, Islam only really comes up in response to right wingers attacking it for illegitimate reasons, so the focus is on countering that, rather than focusing on their views about LGBT stuff.
The right wing has started to hypocritically use the anti-LGBT aspects of Islam as a way to defend their bigotry towards Arabic people–all the while still tolerating or even endorsing anti-LGBT stuff at home. It’s a typical example of projection: they accuse us of being hypocritical while being to themselves.
The extremists are treated more the same by progressives and further left. But the mainstream is different, due to the different contexts. The left is more likely to see that nuance, while its opponents see things in a very black and white way.
It is the extremists who are the problem in both religions. But the fact that one can be anti-LGBT and still be part of the mainstream is also a problem. One I’ve been trying to deal with, being a pro-LGBT, anti-bigotry Christian myself.
I don’t have the in to do it with Islam.
Sounds to me like he’s trying to differentiate himself from the Dravidians who live in the south of India and are darker-skinned. Much like Vivek Ramaswamy, he fancies himself one of “the good ones”.
Off course Indian has multiple languages like Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali, Malayali, Bihari, Bhojouri, Telegu ect. But Hindi is the national language of India.
Hindu is a religion not a race. You do realize there are white Hindus right like white folsk that convert to Hinduism. Just like there are white Muslims and black Jewish people.
Uh,
2 : a native or inhabitant of India
It is clear to me that @Jihi is going for the 2nd definition.
True because there are some folks that want to make India a country for only Hindus which I don’t agree with. India is a country for all Indian citizens regardless of what religion you practice.
That sounds odd to my ears. I would never refer to , say, a Christian from Kerala or as Sikh from Punjab as a “Hindu.” That strikes me as outdated terminology, possibly offensive.
As the dictionary shows, that is not the only definition, but true, there are Hindu ultranationalists that are tearing India apart.
But that is dodging the observation there, it is indeed odd to have a person of Indian descent as describing themselves as a “brown Indian”. I mean, Hispanics like me that have Peach skin tones don’t refer themselves as “Brown Hispanics.”
