How long does turkey keep?

We’re going with a do over of thanksgiving for xmas this year which means more turkey! yay!

Unfortunately I’m a little worried now. I purchased a 19 pounder unfrozen turkey Saturday and we plan on cooking it tomorrow. Will the turkey keep that long? Will it still taste good? The sell by day is the 26th but it was not frozen when purchased and it’s been in the fridge, not the freezer sense Saturday. Are we ok, or should we buy a new one?

It’s fine as long as you’ve had it refrigerated. As with any poultry just make sure the thing is done before you eat it.

The USDA sez 1-2 days for a fresh turkey. (Scroll down to the bottom)

Wow. The USDA is strict. Is it possible that it only takes 1-2 days for the bird to be processed, shipped to the grocery store, and put in somebody’s cart?

But yeah, maybe it’s not safe. It’s been in your fridge for five days, plus however many days it was at the grocer’s. Not worth the risk, IMHO.

I sure hope it’s safe, because that’s exactly what I have- a fresh, unfrozen turkey that I bought on Saturday with a sell-by date of 12/26. I do it every year, and we’re all still alive and unscathed.

Should be fine. If it has turned you’ll know it; there will be a yucky sulfur-y smell and the turkey itself will be stickier than usual. Even then rinse it off good and give it another smell. Sometimes it’s just the juice/blood on the outside and the fowl is still good to eat.
