How much am I likely to receive from the AT&T Data Incident Settlement?

Got another email about this, and am unsure whether it’s worth the effort. I went to the trouble of filling out all the data for a class action suit a few years ago, and got enough for a cup of coffee. It wasn’t worth my effort.

I have no documented losses for this, and really don’t want to send all my banking info for the ACH (direct deposit) payment. Especially if my portion is something like $2.37 for all the risk and trouble.

Is there any way to guess how much this settlement is worth to someone like me (in the lower tiers)?

Thanks in advance for any opinions on this.

An insignificant pittance.

It’s impossible to tell as it depends on how many people file claims - I’ve gotten $2.37 payments on these sort of claims and $200 + payments on others. Are you sure you have to give banking info ? I’ve never had to give bank info - there was always an option for either a digital gift card or a pysical check or Venmo/Zelle with my email address.

I think i filled that out and gave my email address, for either zelle or PayPal.

Yep, same as just above. No real risk of harm.

Same. Usually I get like $5 plus identity monitoring. But the Facebook lawsuit in Illinois sent me $300 for a min of work and no proof needed.

The Venmo/PayPal option makes these super quick nowadays. It just shows up in your account a few years later.

I expect virtually nothing…BUUUT, due to the fact that our account is in my wife’s name and uses my credit card, we have the opportunity to collect TWICE! Sweet! So while some households will get only $2.47, my wife and I will get $4.94. That’s almost a box of Girl Scout cookies.

I had a recent one from I think Facebook again, and that was $4.01. But the other Facebook one was like $300 or so. And I got a Bank of America one years back for a similar amount. So it varies wildly.

I got around $40 for a Facebook settlement (and I rarely use Facebook) with a minimum of effort. They sent me a digital gift card (claimed thru a third party). It’s hard to say how much you may receive, tho, but if you do nothing you will get nothing.

Years ago a friend of mine had a side hustle where she’d sign up for every class action that she could find. There was (still are) websites that have an exhaustive list of existing ones. They do a much better vetting job now but they barely checked before in many cases.

My best score was for Bumble. When the first started I signed up for lifetime Bumble Premium for $200. It was like $30/month so a reasonable deal. Bumble differed from Tinder in that if there is a hetero match, the woman had to make the first text. Some asshole sued them for discrimination and they settled. They did check your email to make sure that you really did pay for Premium. So few people entered the class that I ended up getting $672!

Just yesterday, I got a $41 check from a data breach.

I got one too. One suspects that most if not all of these class action suits are basically nuisance actions brought by opportunistic ambulance-chaser lawyers. I’m certainly not giving any bank details out: that’s a red flag of a scam.

I looked it up. It’s a real class action suit. And i only had to give them an email address, which seemed pretty safe. Dunno if I’ll get anything, but i was curious, and once I’d satisfied my curiosity, the rest of the effort was minimal.

I usually just ask for a check. It’s a bit annoying to take a picture to deposit it, but it gives them the least amount of information of any of the options. Last one I selected a check and they still sent me a Zelle. I’m not sure exactly how that worked, or maybe it was another lawsuit I forgot about. I still got my $2.47.

Most of these payout by dividing the judgement by the number of class members that respond, so my suggestion is to never, ever fill out any of these. Throw them away, particularly if it is a class where I might also be a member.
