… Either on the message boards or anywhere at this site every day? For me, I’d say a couple of hours. If it wasn’t so slow, I might spent more time… or maybe less. Hmmm. Also:
Do you search for particular subjects or posters?
Do you check out every single new post?
Do you feel deprived if you cannot visit here?
-
I’m here just about every weekday (from work). Checking the board keeps me from falling asleep. I also check the boards over at Sports Mogul every morning.
-
Yeah, I search for my own posts so I keep up with threads I’m interested in.
-
Nope. Just ones that look interesting.
-
Yeah, if the boards are down when I try to access them from work. Then I have to find another way to stay awake.
-
This thread might be more appropriate in ATMB.
Way too much!
It’s been really slow at work lately and I’ve been keeping ‘busy’ by reading trade magazines and programming manuals. (Things are gonna heat up again pretty soon, though.) Anyway, I’ve always got at least one window open to the SDMB pretty much all day. Otherwise, I’d be snoring over these manuals right now. I usually spend half an hour or so from home while I’m checking & answering e-mail and other computer stuff from there, also.
Ditto me on Jeff Olsen’s answers no 2, 3, & 4, too.
Actually, I’d say this is better for IMHO than ATMB.
Usually no particular search for subjects but I do a search on my own name for stuff I posted at the previous day (so I can keep up with the thread).
I only hit the threads that have an interesting thread title - I think I miss a lot by that practice!
I do feel deprived if I can’t visit. I spend a lot of time here (the benefit of having your own office and a flexible job) so, yeah, I’m addict. I’m going on vacation next week W-Su, so sheesh, I’ll probably come back trembling, in some kind of detox state.
WAAAAAY TOO MUCH!
Well, I can’t do a search for it right now, but I did a thread titled "Do you think they have any idea how much time I spend on this board? or some such…probably wasn’t so long, but you get the idea.
I spend, depending on the work day 0-4 hours online, which is to say 90% of 0-4 hours on the SDMB. I’ve got a connection at home which allows me to fritter away another 0-5 hours each night, depending. Some of that is at #straightdope, though, so I’m not sure that counts.
Weekends, I’ll pop in for a few, maybe two, hours.
I do a personal search, both editboxes, since I’ve found my name dropped more than once in a thread I’ve never been to and, like many others, I like to keep up with thread I’ve posted to and it’s usually the easiest way to track them down.
I also search for the occasional other Doper (Scylla and Fenris come to mind) to scout out their latest doings.
I don’t check out every single new post, unless it’s in a thread I’m actively involved in.
I don’t feel deprived, but I do like being able to check in, so I find a way to log on from the parents or friends, if only for 20 minutes or so to see what’s active. Hmmm, maybe I do feel deprived!
Who me? Hardly any. I’m not even here now.
Typo: That should be Fenris and Scylla
Anyway, I usually have a SDMB window open on my computer during work. I’d guess I was actually posting and actively reading about 1-2 hours a day.
Fenris
I spend an awful lot of time here and in #straightdope. Lunch hours at work and whenever i can get away with it (i’m lucky - being in a different time zones been i get a wonderfully quick board during my daytime), and then a few hours in the evening.
No, I don’t check every new post - I tend to firstly have a look at any interesting thread titles, then open any threads by posters I enjoy that I may have missed. I have been known to do searches on my very favourite dopers, but due to the recent changes in the search functions and learning that searches are what really ties up the boards, that’s stopping.
And i definitely feel deprived if I can get my SDMB fix. How sad are we?
Fran
Whenever I can get these damn pages downloaded I will spend alot of time looking thru almost all the (interesting looking) posts.
'Course about 80 percent of the time I just sit and wait for the message website not responding to pop up.
Is it just me or does anyone else ever have trouble getting connected to these boards?
and
What is #straightdope?
Abby
Download IRC. Connect to an Undernet server. Once connected, you’re prompted to enter the name of the channel to join. Type: /join #straightdope
That’s all there is to it. There’s a 9 character limit to user names.
Obligitory mention:
#StraightDope is not affliated with The Straight Dope, The Straight Dope Message Board, or the The Reader in any way shape or form.
However, you can find any number of Dopers chatting there day and night.
I check the boards (when I can) several times a day, every day. As well as spending time in #straightdope.
I also spend time in email and icq chats with a few people as well, but I’m not sure if that counts.
I’m normally here for an hour or two after school, and whatever spare time I have on the weekend. Mostly reading, not posting, though - I’m pretty intimidated by most of the people here.
On my days off, I don’t want to say.
Since I can’t access the boards from work, on a work day I’m on and off, depending on the ability to access, about four to five hours.
I won’t be able to spend as much time as I have been. Check my sig file.
It isn’t just you. Trust me.
How much time do I spend on the SDMB? You tell me!
Try this as an experiment-
Read through every post in the IMHO, from the bottom up, for an entire day. Click on every single link to make sure that they do not go to an obscene site. Stop for five minutes every time you see a thread that needs to be moved. Stop for three minutes every time you see a double post that needs to be eliminated. Four minutes for every mistake people need corrected. Two minutes for every warning that needs to be posted.
Now add to this total all the time I spend posting for the sheer fun of it, and all the time I spend in the other forums.
And I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
