How much time do you guys spend on the SDMB?

May I suggest an investment in a laptop? Mr. Ruby and I had dueling laptops on the couch every night before he was deployed and we will again when he returns. It’s a great relationship saver!

Count me among the hopelessly hooked: over 200 posts in just one month.  During the first few weeks I was logged in nearly 24/7, but I’m finally starting to be productive at work again. So my daytime habit is getting under control, but I still have “How did it get to be 1am? It was just 10pm a few minutes ago!” syndrome. I’ve been something of a message board junkie ever since I discovered the internet, and this one definitely seems to be a place where I can take off my coat and stay a while.

I’m getting more efficient with my SDMB-ing, though: for instance, I’ve learned that GD doesn’t interest me much. I’ll check in now and then, but most of the threads are either political or religious and I have very little to say on either subject. And, while I’ve both posted and answered a few questions in GQ, I’m not compelled to check that thread very often. I tend to skip ATMB, Cecil’s Columns, and Staff Reports altogether, unless something on the SDMB main page catches my eye.

The forums that are left – Cafe Society, IMHO, MPSIMS (natch), and the Pit – are where I will get hopelessly lost for hours on end. Reading new threads; thinking about posting and then changing my mind; deciding to post and taking forever to compose my reply (because I’m anal-retentive and will proofread and tweak it several times); etc. If I’m really pressed for time I’ll do a search for posts that I’ve written in the past week, so I at least keep up with whatever threads I’m currently participating in. (I know that searches are a drain on the server, but they’re just too handy to pass up! )

I imagine that I’ll have to cut down on my participation when grad school starts up next week, but for now SDMB is one of the first sites I visit in the morning, it gets checked at various times during the day, and it’s usually the last site I visit at night.

Well, lets just say I work a full-time job, M - F.
Lets just say this job involves me sitting at a computer.
Lets just say I have the SDMB open in a browser.
Lets just say that browser never closes.

Curse you job, and your endless feeding of my addiction!

Am I allowed to just say too much and drop it?

My job is like Trigonal Planar, in that’s it’s mostly a desk job so I can be on the SDMB while really working.

Sometimes I force myself to shut it down because I’m letting non-desk work slide.

I try really really hard never to go on on the weekends or evenings. Mostly I succeed.

I’m with you; my 227 posts to your 235, and we both started in July.

During the Winter, I’ve been known to post close to 100 in a day.

Provided the threads actually warrent a conversation-like style, as in our Trek Doper threads.

Ten Million  s!
Even I’m not that hooked. And boy am I hooked!

Depends on the threads available. If I’m online instead of watching TV, I’ll be on the Dope for 3 to 5 hours anyways. And never underestimate my inability to complete a thought in one post.

Plus, my first Winter here, I had just broken up with my last SO/GF and didn’t feel like going out much. Feels pretty to be here. For the most part.

Depends on what stats. ya look at. I was checking out Earthling’s stat sheet the other day and…
Username Post Rate Post Count

  1. Q.E.D. 17.52 10157

Lobs I see you’re ppd = a mere 8.80 posts per day BUT!
IIRC you are in a lot of the other stats he mentions. in particular the mean3 one of three dopers who actually STARTED threads in every forum. Damn y’all talk a lot.

Elenia28 = 5.49 Not bad, but nowhere near our really hooked dope fiends.
Mine is an insignificant 3.17 ppd BUT I am one of the fab5 being one of ONLY 5 dopers that killed threads in every forum. BTW NCB is in that elite bunch as well.

Thank to Earthling for providing this unbelievable data. He’s an inspiration to geeks everywhere.
Now if we just had a way of rating posts, we could see the quality of the posts made by different members. Expert, intelligent, witty, ignorant, total bullshit, etc.
I guess that’d be asking too much, huh? Probably piss off a few folks too.

Weekday average ~
~ naw, I’m not letting on, I’m supposed to be working dammit (thankfully posting looks just like work  *****)

My home PC is dead (probably just as well). I have snuck into the office to lurk/post at weekends.

Staying over at friends I will sneak on for a quick lurk.

*****Actually it looks more industrious than real work.

Ok, now I’m in real trouble: I just set up a wireless network at home. I am typing this from my living room couch (!). I may never read a book or watch TV again…

I believe it was our lovely and talented TubaDiva who called the boards “caramel covered crack”.

Too much time,(though circumstances have recently changed that will significantly change that–which is good and bad, I suppose.

It’s on all day at work, even though I sometimes don’t get to read much. I rarely get on at night or weekends. (I am a newlywed, ya know! ;)) Tonight is unusual for me.

TubaDiva did say it very well. Caramel covered crack, indeed.

Because I only really come here at work, I needed to devise a system to limit just what I can and cannot read here. It’s simple:

Edit bookmark to read:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/search.php?do=getnew

Then read through the titles, open interesting ones in the background, and stop once I reach the 150th.

Of course, I may do that two or three times a day. But as you can see from my post count, I am not a great contributor.

Hey, thanks for including me! I feel special.

I don’t spend a lot of time here. I see that as a good thing because it means I do not find myself constantly refreshing some webpage to check everyone’s comments and new posts…but at the same time, I get so far behind in reading that I get frustrated and give up. I also feel like I don’t get to make a lot of new friends by not interacting enough.

I work overnights, in a very slow environment (well, the day people do a lot). For me at least, the SDMB is’t a drug, it’s my “keep awake/sane” tool. I spend about 8 hours per day reading, obviously a lot less posting.
