Fast food hamburgers/battered chicken burgers I suppose turkey burgers count as well, huh? 2-3 times per week.

Store-bought cookies (Oreos, etc.) Once a month.

These answers are averages, mind you:

Fast food hamburgers/battered chicken burgers: Once a month
Pizza: I love it, but God, is it bad for heartburn. Used to be twice a month, should be twice a year going forward
Deep-fried/pan-fried with lots of oil home-cooked foods: Once every two months (falafel)
Chocolate bars (other than pure dark chocolate): Once every two months
Donuts: Once every two months
Those huge muffins: Once every six months
Store-bought cookies (Oreos, etc.): Once every two months

But is anyone else shocked at the results above? I’m staggered by how few people report eating these most ubiquitous of foods. What on earth are people actually eating, particularly with obesity so rife?

Chocolate bars (other than pure dark chocolate) - maybe once every two or three months. Pure dark chocolate, one small piece every day if I have it around.

Donuts - maybe a donut once every 4-6 months.

Those huge muffins - maybe once every 6 months.

Store-bought cookies (Oreos, etc.) - very rarely.

3 years ago, I lost 75 lbs by changing my eating habits forever. I cut out almost all packaged foods, packaged baked goods, almost all candy, HFCS, fast food, soda, most things with white flour etc. I try to eat mostly whole foods with tons of fresh produce and vegetables, lean protein, low fat dairy, healthy fats. I limit booze, home made baked goods, ice cream, cold cereal (even the healthy stuff), cheese (mostly because cheese doesn’t like me anymore), eating out of the bread basket at a restaurant and fried foods.

I still enjoy the occasional sweet/dessert, but I prefer it to be a single serving portion in a restaurant. That way I can’t keep eating something until it’s gone. For example, I love a mini serving of dark chocolate gelato from Whole Foods - perfect! Once a week, I try to eat a nice dinner in a restaurant, split a dessert, have a glass of wine.

Potato chips/Cheetos/Doritos etc. - Never. I have a hard time stopping at a regular portion. I occasionally miss Pringles or salt & vinegar potato chips, but I rarely think about it. I do sometimes eat Soy chips, but I have the same issue with portion control, so I try not to bring a big package into the house.

**Fast food hamburgers/battered chicken burgers ** - Never. A combination of Fast Food Nation and Supersize Me killed that for me. My fast food of choice is Chipotle or sushi or a veggie wrap from Subway.

Pizza - 3 times in the past 3 years (not including home-made pizza with Trader Joe’s whole wheat crust). Twice, I was training at a call center and Dominos was the free lunch provided and once was after I spent all day moving. Moving requires pizza! I splurged on a fancy, local, gourmet pizza place, I figured if I was eating pizza, it was going to be gooood pizza.

**Deep-fried/pan-fried with lots of oil home-cooked foods ** - Never, I try to limit fried foods. I never made fried foods at home, I’m not even sure how to make them.

Chocolate bars (other than pure dark chocolate) - You mean like a Hershey bar? Never. That was one of my trigger foods, I had a candy bar or M&Ms nearly every afternoon when I was heavy. I just had to go cold turkey on them. I do eat the occasional piece of really nice dark chocolate. The good stuff doesn’t seem to set off my triggers like the normal stuff.

Donuts - one donut in 3 years. Someone brought in a bunch of donuts a meeting on my birthday (especially for me, they said), so I ate half a chocolate glazed. Not as good as I remember. I used to eat 3 donuts right away out of a dozen from Krispy Kreme, if there were any left, I would sneak a few more (when nobody was looking).

Those huge muffins - I used to start EVERY day with a venti caramel latte with whip and a giant blackberry muffin. I had to give them up. Now that I know the calorie/fat count, I just can’t eat them anymore. I have had the occasional very small wild blueberry muffin at Souplantation (once a month or so?)

Store-bought cookies (Oreos, etc.) - Never - packaged baked goods were one of the foods I deliberately quit eating forever, for a lot of reasons. In part, because most packaged baked goods contain unhealthy transfats, but mostly because they are a trigger food, if I eat 1 Oreo, I immediately want another Oreo, then another Oreo until I have eaten a whole sleeve. If I could eat 2 Oreos and then stop, I might allow them, but I know eating too many just makes me frustrated, angry at myself and miserable - not worth it.

I know exactly why I weighed 200 lbs, I ate too many of the wrong foods everyday. Now that I eat the right foods, pay attention to my daily calories and weigh myself once a week - I am a thin person. Wish I had figured this out 20 years ago.

Most of my food abstinence derives from my inability to control portions. It’s just easier to say no to the first cookie than the second cookie. When I stopped eating so much sugary, fatty junk and started eating healthier foods, I started really enjoying the taste of natural foods and I don’t really miss/crave the bad foods anymore.

When I ate all those foods every day, I weighed 200 lbs and was miserable. Now I don’t eat those kinds of foods and I weigh less than 130 lbs and I’m happy. I found new healthy foods that I love just as much as the old foods (Fage 2% Greek yogurt with fresh blackberries, whole wheat toast with natural peanut butter, baked sweet potato, roasted cherry tomatoes with sea salt). It’s a lot more work - eating healthy foods definitely isn’t as convenient as a bag of chips or a fast food burger - but so worth it to me.

I occasionally (every couple weeks) eat gingersnaps. This is making me look far more nutritionally virtuous than I am. I generally eat fries with or without cheese and gravy at least twice a week, maybe more. Also, I bake a lot of cake and cinnamon buns and things dripping with butter and covered in cream.

  3. Pizza. Frozen pizza about once every two weeks. Pizzeria/take out very rarely. Maybe once per year.

  4. Deep fried. Almost never. Maybe finger foods at a party once or twice a year.

5.Chocolate bars. Almost never. Except for ice cream, I eat almost no sugar.

  1. Donuts. Never. Haven’t had one in at least ten years.

  2. Huge muffins. Never. I’ll eat bagels, but not muffins or donuts.

Where in Maryland? There’s a thin-crust local pizza place in Bowie that is just to die for. I used to go there all the time as a kid. I’ll have to ask my mom if she remembers the name. Starts with a C, though, I remember that much.

Than you for the tip. I’m about 20 minutes north of Towson. Pizza Hut delivered is the only Pizza I like, though. Thin crust and only cheese. Anything else is too exotic, seriously! I was actually thinking of getting some Pizza Hut pizza for dinner tonight but I may not have time before our weekly Karaoke Screech.

All very interesting results. I would say (no big surprise) that most people have their favourites that they go to regularly, rather than grazing from the whole group of not particularly healthy foods.

Maybe the next poll should be done after asking people to keep an actual food diary and marking down how often we eat these foods, and in what quantities. I have a feeling I eat more of these than I admit even to myself. :slight_smile:
