Well…
My profile says the pit is my most posted category, but that’s because it’s the place for omnibus threads (which I don’t really get). And I have participated in BBQ threads by mistake - I surf this board using the recent posts option and don’t pay enough attention to the categories.
I try* not to participate in the personal pittings as I find them unnecessarily mean spirited.
People have this view that the Pit is where posters go to be mean to each other… but it’s mostly where we go to be snarky to politicians and jerks who deserve it.
In fact, I usually ignore the threads like “I pit Grumbledore for the sexist stuff he said in ‘The Ladies of Labrador’ discussion…”
I’ll tell you, the Trump Clusterƒuck thread got me through the last five years, and the Workplace Rants made me feel less alone in my frustration (and convinced me to retire!)…
I’ve posted to the Pit before, but it doesn’t land among my top 6 categories. I’d post more if I was better at conveying devastating wit and snark, but I’m pretty bad at it, and other posters have already got that part covered, so until I get better I’ll let them work their magic without obstruction.
I would have sworn that I virtually never post there, but the Pit is actually fifth choice. I guess because I just get a list of unmuted topics I don’t pay any attention to where they are.
Apparently #5 for me. I’m actually a little surprised that I even have as many posts as that in the Pit. According to Discourse, though, I’ve only started three threads in the Pit, and the last one was back in 2004 so, shit, seventeen years ago. And the subject? Public transport (or human behavior on public transport). The other two were on Latinate plurals (picking out “fora” in particular) and why footballers (soccer players) are a bunch of histrionic toddlers. Interesting grab bag of not-so-Pit-worthy topics.
It says thirdmost, but that might be misleading because I read way more than I post in the Pit. I recently stopped following the individual poster pittings so I’m not sure how this affects the data as well.
The BBQ Pit is 7th in frequency with only the quarantine forum getting less attention from me. I guess that I really don’t spend my time trying to straighten folks out or giving them a good cussin.
I have about 5215 posts in the Pit. Since I recently downloaded all my posts from the Activity page just to see how it works, I know I have around 40,000 posts on this board. So it’s around 1/8th of my posts here.
My top is IMHO, with 8411. With 5494, I have about as many posts in GQ as in the Pit. The oldest forum that doesn’t make the top six is GD, unless you count CCC.
I’m sure that, if these were based on when we moved to Discourse, both Site Issues and TQZ would be higher.
That one doesn’t appear to be in order, however, based on the list that has six, and shows all the numbers.
The one the OP is asking about is found on your Profile page, if you choose the Summary tab. The way I found my profile page was to middle click on my avatar in the upper right of the screen.
[golf clap] Thanks! I recently joined AAA because I have an old car that my wife is sure is going to break down hundreds of miles from anywhere. I won’t tell her how bad their service is, but I’ll make sure I have a plan B if I have trouble …
(But, notice? I read the post, but didn’t post a reply there, so Discourse doesn’t count it as me being in the Pit.)
I’ve never intentionally posted in the Pit. A thread I started around ten years ago wound up being moved there; that’s the only reason I have any posts in the Pit at all.
I do read it, though. It can be highly entertaining.
4th by a wide margin. I’ll read Pit threads occasionally, and respond very rarely. Life’s too short to listen to people bitching all the time. So I’ll peek in to see if a topic promises to be somewhat entertaining, but mostly, I forget the forum is there.
I don’t generally pay attention to what category a topic’s in before deciding whether to read it or to post in it. I have several times realized that something’s in the pit only when I was thinking of reporting a post – I’ll check first, is this in the pit? no sense in reporting it, then (depending on the reason for reporting, anyway.) I’ll also check before posting if I want to post something only permitted there; but that’s not going to be a matter of wanting to spew random insults, it’s going to be a matter of responding honestly to what I think of somebody’s actual posts.
