And I hate baths. The water never stays warm for long enough, and the average bathtub is not big enough to be comfortable. now if I had a really big square one…
with one of those comfy bath pillows…
Twice a day…sorta. I take a full shower in the morning before my desk job, then a quick body shower at night after working in the shop. In the past I’ve had jobs that were much more physical so I showered every day when I got home. Since it’s almost summer and I live in Houston, I’ll probably put about two inches of water in the tub everyday just to soak in and cool off.
I’ve never tested this, but I don’t think I could fall asleep at night if I had not showered before bedtime. Even if I showered post-workout at 6 pm, at the risk of sounding compulsive, I still have to take a quick rinse before bed. I sweat a lot; even normal evening activity makes me feel sticky and I can’t sleep with that feeling.
Same here! If I had short hair, I’d probably shower daily.
Once a day, definitely. I put “mornings”, but since I work at home, sometimes that turns into “afternoon”.
I shower if I’m leaving the house. I work from home 80% of the time, and try not to schedule anything on days when I don’t have to go out to work, so those days I give my extraordinarily dry skin a break and don’t subject it to water. I wash the key areas, and I don’t smell.
My guess, for those who say that their colleagues don’t shower often and smell, is that said colleagues are also not washing their clothes often enough. In my experience, clean person + clean clothes = golden. Clean person + once-worn clothes = fine. Not clean person + once-worn clothes = dicey. Not clean person + multiply-worn clothes = not pleasant at all.
Yeah, my old boss once made a comment about doing laundry “every three weeks”. In my experience, dirty college students waited two weeks and the rest of the world did laundry weekly or bi-weekly.
Some people genuinely don’t sweat, but they’re never the people who don’t shower - my SO is one of them - when he works out he turns bright red all over and gets incredibly hot, but he doesn’t sweat out the heat.
What’s with the rolly eyes? It does feel way cleaner than just wiping off.
Is showering unsafe? I suppose you could fall, but well…I figured it was just an occupational hazard.
The laundry question has got me wondering. Maybe we should do a how often do you do laundry poll. I do it every week. I know we’ve had dopers who express shock at the idea of only wearing a bra once before washing. But I thought that was normal. I have enough bras to wear a bra only once without washing (plus in a week sometimes I wear some non brassiere tops), but if I did laundry every two weeks that would never fly.
Eh… that would depend on the amount of clothes you’d have, wouldn’t it? Since I stagger my clothes, sometimes I have loads that may take weeks to accumulate before I run out of clean ones, while others I have to watch more frequently, about once every other week.
I almost never take showers during the summer months. I take baths instead, but whether a bath or a shower, it’s almost always at night. During the Spring and Fall semesters I’m teaching PE classes at a local university, so I shower then. If not a class night, or during the summer, it’s a bath.
I HATE bathing in the morning, I have no idea why, but it just feels so invasive.
Currently I am bathing once in the evening (or every other evening) as that’s the only time the hot water in my building is reliable.
I have long hair and don’t usually wash it at the same time I wash my body.
My bathing habits have varied a ton over the years. I don’t technically need to do it very often - I don’t sweat a lot even when exercising (I run, do yoga, lift weights), I don’t get body odor because I’m lucky I guess, and I use baby wipes on my [shaved] nethers so they are always squeaky clean. I could probably go for longer than a week, as long as I applied deod regularly and wore clean clothes, and smell fresh. However my skin would get irritated - it needs regular rough exfoliation to be happy.
This past winter I was only bathing a couple times per week. In the summer I might bathe as often as 2-3 times per day just because it feels good. Basically I only shower because it’s enjoyable, and when it’s cold in my apartment it’s not enjoyable, so I put it off.
Wouldn’t you feel weird putting on deodorant without showering/bathing first? The idea of not being totally clean and putting it on totally squicks me out. I remember that on the Wonder Years, Wayne did this and Kevin thought it was disgusting and ever since then I thought it was one of those hygiene no-no’s.
No, I don’t feel weird about it at all and I think it’s odd you would think it’s gross. I apply it daily or sometimes multiple times daily whether or not I shower. It’s just scent in some sort of carrier (I don’t use antiperspirants, I use a ‘natural’ spray or men’s Speed Stick).
I will add that I am EXTREMELY sensitive to BO. I hate it when other people have it, and am aware of the smallest odor from myself. Most people I have known with moderate BO are clean people who bathe a normal amount and use deoderant, they are just cursed with bad body chemistry, or perhaps aren’t washing properly/applying deod more than once per day. I was friends with a boy once who would smell strong and nasty literally 15 minutes after showering. Life ain’t fair.
I just figure what if you’ve started to sweat after you’ve put it on? I mean, you don’t start sweating within hours of putting it on, no, but the idea of going for more than a week without showering makes me think that you’re going to acquire SOME BO and the idea of combating that by putting on more deodorant seems creepy. Like not bathing and putting on perfume or scent to cover up the odor. shudder And that’s why I could never be a hippie.
I shower when I need it. I don’t go by days. That is weird to me. Some days I don’t need to shower; other days I will twice in a day. I don’t mind being dirty that much so if I’m just hanging around the house I won’t even think about it. Too much water wasted, too much time wasted. I have a LOT of dry curly hair so I try to avoid washing it as long as I can, maybe every three days. Other days I can spritz it with water and mousse or just tie it up. If I wash it too often it gets awfully dry.
NOTE: I rarely go beyond three days bathing because I HATE stubbly legs!
While I make no comment about your smell or lack thereof, I sincerely doubt you can be aware of the smallest odor from yourself. Our noses simply aren’t that good.
Sweat isn’t dirty, and it doesn’t smell. What smells is whatever bacteria grow in it, which depends on the person, and BO is different on everyone. Yeah, my armpits don’t smell like they do fresh out of the shower after a long day - but they do after another layer of deod! FWIW my pits are pretty much always a bit damp, and applying deod makes them sweat more.
As long as someone looks neat and clean and doesn’t smell bad, I could care less what they do to get there. There are people who never use soap or shampoo and smell fine… there are people who bathe once a week usually, and you would never know! There are also people who smell bad and have visibly greasy hair, even though they bathe once or twice per day. I judge these unlucky people as gross, even though they make much more effort than me to be clean.
You might think you don’t smell because you’re just smelling your deodorant, the smell might be stronger than your natural B.O.
I just have a really hard time believing an adult can go an entire week without showering with no B.O.
Every other day? Fine. Every three days? Ehh…ok, I guess I can buy it depending on the person. Once a week? No f’n way.
My grandparents used to bathe once a week and wore their clothes at least three days each.
I never noticed them smelling bad (and my grandmother didn’t use deodorant). My grandpa was a carpenter, too.
Most people you ask in the older generations think a daily shower is nuts.
I, however, am not of the older generation and will continue to shower in the morning, every morning (unless I have heavy work to do that day and then I will just be dirty until I am finished and have a chance to shower).
