How stupid can people get??

My favourite (so far):

Tolkien ain’t talkin’ ‘bout Jee-zus, he’s talkin’ 'bout Ayl-viss!

This one is a lot of fun, in a weird semi-stream-of-consciousness kind of way:

Not people living outside the US. Never heard of the World Trade Centre referred to as “The Two Towers” until this thread. The title of the second volume (or, the third and fourth books if you wanna get picky) of The Lord of the Rings is common knowledge, however.

'Course, we’re all in agreeance here.

Fiver, that was a thing of beauty.

"Well, the world’s in a great commotion
From the Misty Mountains down to the Shire
The Hobbits are sneakin’ and wanderin’
From the frying pan into the fire
Somewhere we gotta get a hero
That’s what the bards all sing
But the never expected the rockin’ and rollin’ I bring . . .

It’s the return of the king (uh-huh)"

Just out of curiosity – has any of these stupid online petitions ever actually changed something?

…notice that they were “voiding false entries” left and right in the beginning. But they’re letting people have more fun with it now. I think we’ll continue to see funny (and often stupid) gag replies. Mark my words. Tolkien isn’t the only prophet…

Yes. It is a sham. On another board I post on, there’s one guy who frequents other forums that Kevin Klerck frequently posts to. Supposedly Klerck has earned the reputation of the “ultimate slashdot troll.”

So, yeah, its one big joke by a guy who has a history of getting people worked up. The fact that the guys at somethingawful supposedly signed this as well seems to support this.

Although, I do wonder about some of those entries that seem like they actually take the petition seriously…

And about the person who asked if online petitions accomplish anything–they do not. Even handsigned petitions are generally not worth the paper they’re printed on. Phone calls, handwritten letters, and to some extent email are the only effective ways (other than arranging a tete-a-tete meeting) to accomplish things like this. (Well, if you can generate enough press, that can help too.)
