Ah, I see. Carry on then.
Most of us are just saying Morgan always was an asshole, is an asshole now, and will always be an asshole. Furthermore, if he hates this country so much he can get the fuck out. Problem is the Brits hate him don’t want him either.
I understand your confusion. Let me explain: Different people have different opinions, you fucking moron.
I think he’s a God damn idiot.
Oh, no! Not BigT’s ignore list. Anything but that. How can anyone survive the shame?
It’s not that “gay bar” is offensive in a way that other “<adjective> bars” aren’t. It’s that Morgan’s picture has this air of, “Look how hip I am! I’m in a gay bar!” Piers - a wealthy celebrity who has lived in New York and London - is coming across like a middle aged housewife from Corpus Christie having a “wild” vacation in the big city.
Also, DrFidelus raises a good point. Almost any other celebrity tweeting this wouldn’t be a big deal. Piers Morgan, however, is unable to say or do anything without coming across as a cringing asshole. If he walked up to me and said, “I like ice cream,” my instinctive response would be, “Go fuck yourself.”
“Censorship” is really a stretch - and certainly no one is arguing that describing a bar as “gay” should be shameful in anyway. Here’s the thing: Piers Morgan wanted people to know, specifically, that he was in a gay bar that night. Why was it important to Morgan that people know it was a gay bar? Most likely, because he wanted people to know that he’s okay with gay rights. Which is a good thing! Except, as I noted above, there’s that whole “cringing asshole” aspect to Morgan’s character. When Morgan takes a strong stance on gay rights issues (which he often does) it always feels incredibly inauthentic to me. Morgan’s opinions on gay rights sound less like the result of a functioning moral value system, and more like the outcome of a marketing survey. “Gay rights have big numbers now, so I’m going to call the Archbishop of York a homophobe on national television.” And I don’t even disagree with the premise! I just don’t like being pandered to, and someone turned Morgan’s “pander” knob to eleven then snapped it off.
He’s generally pretty good on the “G” part of “LGBT” rights - with the previous caveats about him being an insincere smarm monster.
As far as I know, that’s still idiosyncratic usage. Nearly everything I read still uses Latino, and I know I’ve not heard the word out in the wild, since I don’t even know how it would be pronounced. La-teen-ex? Latin-X? la-tinks? No clue.
Even worse is Latin@. That’s o and a mixed. Nava brought it up a while back. Maybe pronounced la-teen-o-uh?
If I’m wrong, and either term has picked up steam, let me know.
So the criticism of him using gay bar instead of just a bar is irrelevant, it’s because he is an asshole that the criticism of him is warranted and right. Anyone else, meh. Go back to calling it a gay bar, this is a Piers Morgan issue only.
As shocking and surprising as it might sound to you, I actually prefer calling people what they’d like to be called. Not using terms or expressions another person finds offensive or insensitive. I know it’s crazy, but it’s how I roll. I don’t call people the n-word, colored, etc… It’s a little murky on the black versus African American preference, but since it isn’t clear or there’s a one-way only that’s considered right, I can use both without issue, but it’s something I think a good person follows or keeps track of and up to date on, like the earlier posters mother/grandmother wondering what the right term for her to use was.
Nowhere am I, her, or whoever in this thread argued they should be allowed to say whatever it is they want to whoever and whenever they want, although they should and have the right to do so. No, people like me are saying we WANT to follow the norms and be sensitive to others it just changes so fast and so often it’s hard to keep up.
That’s how I read this thread - ‘It changed again, is that really the new norm?’
Eye-rolling over that hardly seems like an earth shattering stance because at the same time it’s a criticism of the speed at which these are changing, it’s also an admission that one wants to follow those norms and stay up to date on what they are or are changing to.
I mean, did or has anyone here said ‘Fuck that, I’m going to call them whatever I feel like calling them, sensitivities and feelings be damned?’ I didn’t read that or interpret that from anyone’s comments so far, but it seems to be the assumption some want to adhere to those critical or eye-rolling of the change.
And that still, whether this is or is not a legitimate issue to consider, whether you call it a gay bar or just a bar, is unclear, and gets back answers like the above - ‘it’s only because he’s an asshole that that was said, nevermin the gay part.’. Others on the other hand (apparently) say that really is the issue, and the term shouldn’t be used.
An agreed upon standard would be nice, but maybe it’s too soon to come to one yet. This thread sure doesn’t answer it.
**** On edit I see Miller’s post.
It still sounds more like an issue with Piers Morgan than anything else. And if that’s the care, what do I care, you think he’s an ass and it’s just more fuel for the fire.
The gay bar versus just a bar though seems like it’s still up in the air though, and possibly a thing soon that isn’t mentioned. I’ll be curious to see how it progresses.
Believe me, the feeling’s mutual.
Be sure to start a new thread and let us know. We’ll be busy still not giving a flying rat’s ass.
How cute, a changed quote.
Not really. You’re allowed to make minor edits to a quote to clarify who the pronouns are referring to. Hewey’s not following the exact Chicago Manual of Style recommendations, there, but he’s not breaking a board rule.
I think you mean ‘a flying females rat’s ass’. You know, in keeping with your theme of ripping on people by calling them women, or less then men, from the first page.
LOL. I smell a running coach reported post.
Better brush up on that user agreement you got printed out there coach. Don’t want to keep fucking up a ‘work’. They might just let you go if you keep that up.
That color is unreadable on a white background; I had to hit quote to see what you wrote, so I thought I’d go ahead and tell you that. Or is that why you picked it?
Did someone say “Gay Bar?”
It is.
I’m getting confused.
Are we to continue using “gay-bar” because only three people complained or are we ass-holes if we continue?
Fuck those people with a tetsubo.
It’s like the town that had an annual mock gunfight and then cancelled it because one asshole complained. Then had to backtrack because thousands of people got pissed off at them for cancelling it over that single complaint.
Back in the day, there were probably people who complained because the Brady Bunch wasn’t wholesome enough or the Waltons weren’t talking about God every 5 minutes. Today we have morons complaining about the use of the term ‘Gay bar’ to accurately describe a bar catering to gay people.
There’s significantly more people in this thread complaining about the complaints than the three people who complained on twitter in the first place.
In what kind of shameful fucking newspaper is three morons on Twitter considered news?!
