Channel flipping, I caught Piers Morgan Tonight, where he had a guest (!) from the NRA, and they were talking guns.
Holy crap! Morgan wouldn’t let the guy talk! He kept repeating questions, over and over and over. “How many? Answer the question. Just answer me.” This went on endlessly. I watched in shock, horror, and disgust.
I’m on the gun-control side of the debate… But I wouldn’t treat a goddamn Nazi as badly as Morgan treated that guy. I thought I was seeing Bill O’Reilly!
The “You must answer my question” game is execrable in debate forums here, but at least we have the ability to frame our responses, whether or not we choose to answer. But to interrupt, continually, repeatedly, in that inquisitorial fashion… That isn’t decent.
The guy may hold opinions akin to mine…but he doesn’t speak for me!
This being the pit… May he be boiled in vinegary turds!
Thank you so much, America, for taking this oleaginous, vicious, jumped up, brow beating little turd off our hands here in the UK. Cultural and political discourse over on this side of the pond has only improved due to his scarpering to the USA. I’m only sorry that someone has to put up with him.
Hopefully, CNN will not renew his contract when it is up. Then, the best thing for everyone in both the US and the UK would be if we both found out that we could all get along perfectly well without him and refused to give him the oxygen of publicity anymore.
I’ve only seen a few minutes of him but I see the ads all the time because I leave CNN on when I’m doing something else. Apparently Piers Morgan has come over from England to set us silly, ignorant Americans straight on the guns. Is he some kind of gun expert or is he just smarter than everyone else because he has a British accent? Who can say? He makes me hate all British people, sorry.
I mean, you can dislike him, but that is basically his schtick. Whether you think he’s 'brutally honest and determined to get an answer" or “a total prick” is up to you. But that’s been what he does basically his whole career.
Personally, given the number of times I have seen an interviewer ask a question that is not-so-artfully dodged, or responses that are never followed up on, I find the style of interviewing that actually presses for a real answer refreshing.
In the few times I’ve watched him I’ve also seen him go off on a celebrity who’s a vocal atheist (Penn Jillette, maybe? I honestly don’t remember). Morgan’s apparently very religious, though clearly it doesn’t interfere with his ethics.
As a fellow pitter of this smug self-satisfied shitwipe I can get behind this pitting 100%. I pitted him for irresponsible journalism which in my opinion bordered on treason - can’t find the thread (maybe it was in the winter of our missed content) but the long and short of it was that the newspaper he edited printed pictures purporting to show British Army personnel urinating on Iraqi prisoners - this was in the wake of the Abu Gharab scandal. It turned out later that the pictures were totally fraudulent, meaning that fact checking - even if it prevents jeopardy to servicemen from his own country - takes a back seat to selling papers.
What’s more, they weren’t even good fakes. See here for reasons why they couldn’t be taken where the Mirror claimed that they were. He lost his job, but this sensationalist propaganda aided and abetted our enemies and as far as I’m concerned he and anyone involved in this disgusting sham should have been in a prison cell and not given a goddamn primetime show on ITV. At least the Army remembers the slight.
Maybe the network executives like having him as an ‘easy to hate’ panto villain type way, but he is genuinely vile.
Please, please don’t judge all of Her Majesty’s subjects by the least of them; it’d be like one of those loudmouth Fox windbags coming over here and us judging all Americans to be like O’Reilly/Hannity/Limbaugh/Beck or what-have-you. Although in my opinion Morgan is still 100 times worse than all of them combined.
Unfortunately there’s tendency in America to think that anyone who speaks with a British accent, particularly a posh British accent, is intelligent and saying something smart.
If Morgan actually spoke with a flat American Midwestern accent CNN would never have employed him.
Once, twice, even three times, maybe. But at that point you simply say, “Okay, since you refuse to answer the question, let’s move on.” To continue the hectoring is simply a waste of air time.
Gadz! That’s like burning down the house to get rid of the termites. It’s plenty simply not to watch the turd any longer.
No worries; I know a statistical outlier when I see one. John Cleese more than makes up for him!
Heh! While an English accent is alluring and sounds smart and witty, alas, we know better. Just as one other example, there’s Ian Taylor who sounds just as charming as anything…until you realize he’s a creationist doofus and doesn’t have the moral ethics that God gave a rabid vole.
Nope: every population has its heroes and its villains. Pity about Morgan and Taylor, but we’ve got Cleese and Hawking, and, again, they more than make up for the dipshits.
Not with his stance on gun control. In fact, one reason why he probably isn’t as hated as much in the U.S. as he is in Britain is that the people who seem to hate him the most in this country are the rabidly right-wing gun-fondlers.
The other reason why Morgan isn’t hated as much in the U.S. is because nobody watches CNN any more.
Piers Morgan is a bulging colostomy bag of a human being, but to be fair to him*, British interviewers tend to be a bit more inquisitorial/combative than what I’ve seen of US ones.
