How to Fix an Outlook Feature

My “Mail” (akin to Outlook, but for Mac) always wants to place attachments in the body of the email itself. Is there an option to attach a file without embedding? It seems there should be an option under “Edit”, but it’s not clear cut. The attachment always winds up embedded. I have version 16.0. I figured the SD would know.

Try changing the message format to Plain Text.

Works for Outlook, but may not for other email apps.

In my Outlook it looks like below:

BUT…if you have your settings set to Rich Text then the attachment is in the email:

Seems like there’s two things you can do. One is to attach the file always at the end (Edit → Attachments → Insert Attachment at End), and the other is to disable the content preview, either by right-clicking the preview and selecting ‘view as icon’, or by setting a configuration flag via the command line (see the article). I don’t have a Mac, so I can’t test either of these things, however.

Thanks for your thoughts. I will see if one of these suggestions will work.

It sounds like the word “outlook” is a complete red herring here. The OP is using a Mac-specific app that is not Microsoft’s Outlook for Mac.

As such, any advice predicated on Outlook features is very likely to be irrelevant.

As best I can tell @Half_Man_Half_Wit has found the genuine Apple documentation. Although one of the options at the top of their cite is selecting which version of iOS you’re using so the OP may need to diddle that setting to get the best advice.

I had a moment to look into this. Yes, there is an option to switch between rich text and plain text. One has to be in an open email so the option is not grayed out. And, yes, plain text adds attachments as I would expect…less “in your face” as seen in rich text.

“You can change how attachments are displayed in the Compose window (this doesn’t determine how attachments are shown for your recipients). To display an attachment (such as a one-page PDF document or an image) as an icon, Control-click the attachment in your message, then choose View as Icon. To show the attachment again, Control-click it, then choose View in Place.”
