This works best with the tear-off feed strips from the kind of paper you use with a dot matrix printer. (My school has really old printers, despite having a modern Sun lab. Go figure.) You can also use straw wrappers, chopstick wrappers, anything long and narrow.
Take one end and make an overhand knot, then carefully close it tighter and flatten it until you have a pentagon. Starting with the short end and continuing with the long end, wrap the strip around the pentagon, creasing the folds but leaving the middle of the growing pentagon puffed out a little. When you run out of strip, tuck it under itself neatly. Now pinch the edges of the pentagon in towards the center, and you will end up with a little paper star.
My fiancee informs me that these stars are cute. I suppose they are, but guys are sometimes ill-informed in these areas. Lately I’ve taken to hiding a few stars in the passenger side visor in the car, so that they fall on her when she uses the visor. This results in squeaks of delight from J, followed by kisses when appropriate (ie, not when I am forced to manuver several lanes over at an interchange).
