How to send private message on facebook

I’ve looked online for this and got confused rather than informed.

"Click the Messages link on the left side of your home page." – There isn’t one. There’s a Messenger link, but that seems to be a whole different animal, and the rest of the instructions don’t fit.

"Click the messages icon in the navigation bar…There you see a link with the words Send a new message." – No you don’t. A box pops up that tells me we’re friends on facebook and are connected on Messenger. I can type a message into it. However, I can’t for the life of me find a way to SEND that message.

Help please!

Facebook messaging has changed over the years so you may be seeing old info that doesn’t fit with new layouts.

On your desktop browser:

To message a friend:

  1. Click Messenger on the left.
  2. Click the “New Message” icon which is at the top right of the left-hand pane there
  3. Start typing your friend’s name, which will bring up your friend in a partial-match list.
  4. Click your friend’s name/profile to put them as the recipient.
  5. Type your message, hit enter, it should send w/o having to click any sort of submit button.

OR

  1. Click the Messenger icon in the top right of your browser. It’s between “Friend Requests” and “Notifications.”
  2. Something should drop down that has a “New Message” link at the top. Click “New Message”
  3. A little box comes up in the bottom right of your screen.
  4. Start typing your friend’s name in the “To:” part of the little box. WHen your friend’s profile comes up choose them.
  5. Type your message and hit ENTER. It will send w/o a submit button.

OR
To message a friend or To message someone you are not friends with:

  1. Go to their profile on Facebook
  2. Click “Message” at the top of their profile
  3. A little message window pops up in the bottom of your screen with the person’s name filled in
  4. Type your message and hit ENTER to send w/o needing a submit button

That’s great, Zipper, thanks.

I CAN’T do pms on facebook on my phone because I don’t have messenger. but I can on my netbook, where I also don’t have messenger.

Because of your confusey face I’ll assume you are asking a question. Facebook modified their PM model a while back to separate out messaging to a separate application. This is a separate app on mobile platforms and messaging from within the FB app is no longer supported. It is not separate on the full web site interface used on a desktop machine (which applies to a netbook).
