Inspired by the baseball thread that started in April (when my Rockies actually led the division for a few days before self-destructing.)
Football doesn’t look much better. CU Buffs are 0-3 after losing to three schools with “State” in their names and the tough part of the schedule still ahead of them; the Broncos are 1-1, managing to lose to a team that didn’t score a single touchdown in the game, then turned around and won the same way – against St. Louis and Kansas City, respectively. Is it a Missouri thing? Oh, yeah, and then there’s my alma mater, the Bears of the U. of Northern Colorado. If ya’ can’t land the starting kicker spot legitimately, have the guy stabbed in the leg! Lotsa’ class, Bears, lotsa’ class!
For me, Saturdays so far have been tough (Fighting Illini fan), but Sundays have been great (Bears fan). I fear that Saturdays will remain pretty much the same, and that Sundays will go downhill…being a Chicagoan, I have pretty much learned to be a pessimist.
My Vikes meet the bears Sunday which will hopefully be a good game. We know they can spank GB and Det. Not much of a test so far. The NFC North will be decided Sunday.
I work at the U of Mn. They’ve only played fake teams. They beat Temple 62-0 Saturday.
U of GA (my school): 3-0, with two consecutive shutouts (one of Steve Ratfaced Spurrier’s team).
Atlanta Falcons (my old hometown): 2-0, shutting down Carolina and Tampa Bay while piling 500+ yards total on two preseason-hyped run defenses.
TN Volunteers (where I currently live): 2-1, after another loss to FL. Frankly, I’d have preferred that UT beat FL because I don’t think that UT is really all that good and I (cross fingers) think GA will handle them rather easily. I don’t know about FL, though…
My teams: The Tennessee Titans are a woeful woeful woeful 0-2 and I am having visions of an 3-13 season and it makes me feel kinda empty inside.
However, my alma mater is cheering me up. Illinois State is ranked No. 7 in the latest Division I-AA poll and that was before they beat No. 18 Eastern Illinois 44-30 Saturday. They took Kansas State to the wire in their opener, losing 23-23 when they elected to go for the two and the win rather than tie after a late touchdown. And the coach is pass-happy, which always puts a giddy-up in my step.
(bonus info - EIU’s head coach is Bob Spoo - how great a name is that?)
My Wolverines thoroughly himiliated the Irish this weekend, so that’s going well.
On the other hand, my Browns seem to be circling the drain already. That Week 1 loss to the Saints did not bode well, and the upcoming schedule looks brutal.
My other NFL Team, the WhoeverIsPlayingTheBears, is also not doing well. Seriously, these Bears fans I live with are worse than Ohio State fans.
UW fan. The Badgers are looking strong against suspect teams, so don’t really know what we have yet.
The Packers? Well, I wasn’t expecting them to shock the world with all those newbies, but they seem to be coming along at a better-than-expected pace. I’ll hold off definitive opinion until week 6 or 7. Man, Favre seemed to get around pretty well with that walker yesterday.
