Everybody says my screen name “sur-VAYZ,” which is what it looks like, and in the real world, that’s how it’s pronounced.
But when my brother and I came up with it years and years ago, we said it like this: “sur-VY-uh-see.” That, in my mind, is the proper pronunciation, and it grates on my ear when it’s said otherwise, despite how rational it may seem to do so.
So now I’ll expect it to be pronounced correctly by everyone at the PNW Dopefest in… <checks watch> …fifty-four minutes.
Oh, all right, it’s pronounced the way it looks. Why couldn’t I pick something slick and exotic? I could change it, but I’d have to ask a mod. And I’m AFRAID of mods. People disappear all the time and invariably mods have something to do with it.
Oh,god, I’ve said too much!
Though I’ve been around a while, I rarely post, so it’s unlikely anyone has ever wondered how to pronounce mine, but just on the off-chance that someone has read one of the many Muppet-related threads I’ve contributed to, I’ll clue ya in.
It’s “Pea-Ar-En” then the word “Youth”.
No really exotic meaning behind it. Just a set of initials and a word related to my vocation.
As for Protesilaus, it seems it’s supposed to be pronounced this way, but I had no idea what the proper pronunciation was when I chose it, and I’m not even sure what the pronunciation guide in the link is supposed to be saying anyway, so I’m going to stick with the way I thought it was originally - pro-tay-SIGH-loss.
I’m sure this has been asked before, but I’ve been wondering about the correct pronunciation of Gaudere.
How to pronounce Gaudere . . . well, I think (though I’ve never actually verified this) that it’s the Latin verb “to rejoice”. So that’d be Gow-dair’ay. I think.
::hopes Gaudere doesn’t come in here and kick his ass for the possibly erroneous pronunciation guide and derivation::
Whatever works for you, really, as long as I know it means me. I started out pronouncing it the first way myself, but am now tending towards the second for reasons of brevity and general fun-ness.
In reading that, I just had a brief George Thoroughgood moment: B-b-b-b-b-Boy… Weird.
It’s actually rather easy when you look at it. Misfit (although that spelling always looks funny to me :p) As I’ve mentioned before, this is also my license plate, and people tend to look at it with their heads cocked to one side and say “My . . . spit?” Or “What’s a sfit?”
Well, actually I do have spit, but I’m not broadcasting it that much.
