"Human Target", only not that name?

I vaguely recall reading about a TV series from the early to mid '60s(?) about someone who would deliberately put themselves in harms way in order to lure out assassins, give the police grounds to arrest mob leaders on attempted murder charges, etc. I thought it was “Human Target”, only a web search tells me that was the name of two DC comics series, plus a very short-lived TV series based on them, which I’m sure isn’t what I was thinking of. Was there a TV show with the theme of a human target, but not by that name?

Have a bump. Doesn’t ring a bell for me…

That was the theme of the DC comics series, a master of disguise who would be a decoy. A TV pilot (and short-lived series) based on the comic and starring singer Rick Springfield may be what you’re thinking of. 1992.

Out of interest, what makes you think it isn’t the short lived TV series you mentioned? The description is a close match, apart from the date, 90’s not 60’s, and you aren’t even sure about the date.

I can’t think of anything with that specific description in that time frame. Two possibilities:

Checkmate. A detective agency that stopped crimes before they happened. I don’t know if they actually put themselves in harms way, but it’s possible.

Tightrope. Mike Connors as a cop who went undercover to go after the mob. He would draw out mob leaders, and would have to deal with the fact that most cops thought he was a bad guy.
