As far as SA was concerned, Harvey was a, as my wife put it, a drizzle-fizzle.
Major flooding event overnight in Houston, as expected. I’m dry and power’s still on at my north suburban location, but it’s looking pretty bad downtown and southeast.

Still so far so good here, but I’m prepared for power to go out at any point.
Oh wow, that stinks. Stay safe.
Just got back from a quick foray out. High water all over the place; risky to go more than a few blocks in any direction. The 1970’s subdivision a couple blocks from my place is flooded out for, I think, the fourth time in five years, poor bastards.
In our part of Austin area (Cedar Park, north side) we are having strong gusts of wind about every five minutes. Enough to break off branches from several big bushes. Lots of rain but more steady, medium to light rain, no downpours. I am glad not to be in Houston and hope everyone stays safe.
A co-worker of mine was in Houston this past week visiting family. Talked to him Friday morning, his biggest concern was getting home, his flight was schedule to leave Houston on Saturday morning. Had a text on my phone from him this morning, his flight was delayed 4 hours but he made it back to Seattle last night.
I’m not getting on the roads for several days. You can see on the Houston Transtar site all the high water places on the highways. I know a lot of roads are the same.
I feel bad for people in Meyerland, I heard on the news that they’re flooded, and I’m pretty sure they were flooded in the floods these past two years.
Houston’s problem is and has always been drainage rate, so the problem is not the total amount of rain, but the rate of rain. Allison dumped 15" in one day. Harvey is going to do 20"-30" in four-five days. I believe flooding will be a lot less.
Oooh, boy. Hope you and yours are doing okay.
According to Houston Flood Control District - it is 8-12" inches in most of Houston with 13-14" in places - in 24 hrs. The 13-14% is comparable to Allison - that is a very high rate of rain and will cause widespread flooding, since the drainage systems cant handle it.
Twitter is heartbreaking…people are tweeting their addresses and asking for help.
Looks like your prediction was a bit off.
If it was 20-30" over five days as predicted, it would be correct. Based on the actual figures, I revised it above.
Made it to a shelter, water was still rising when I left. Got a boat ride to the freeway, the road was at least chest deep in some places. What a mess.
I know I wrote something earlier but I am seeing footage of the storm and I can’t believe my eyes. If you are in its path please, please be well. I am terrified for the people there.
“It was a hard rain, a perpetual rain, a sweating and steaming rain; it was a mizzle, a downpour, a fountain, a whipping in the eyes, an undertow at the ankles; it was a rain to drown all rains and the memory of rains.”
– Ray Bradbury, The Long Rain
Does anyone know a part of Houston named Pearland, I believe? Is it near flooding? My mom and sister have been trying to call there, to a nursing home, where my cousin’s step-mother lives. So far we haven’t made contact. Will try again this afternoon. I’m told the residence is near an airport, which one I don’t know.
I’m concerned about her, she is really sweet, although her mental state is slipping.
Pearland is a few miles from Hobby Airport (although there is a small airport in Pearland as well). That area was one of first hit when the hard rain started falling last night. Communications will be difficult, but your stepmother is likely OK. Emergency personnel have been prioritizing facilities such as nursing homes.
Thanks for the info! It’s not my step-mother, but my cousin’s stepmother, my uncle’s second wife. My uncle is gone but she’s still a part of the family.
I saw pictures from one nursing home, where the residents have been rescued. Before help arrived this elderly lady was sitting in a wheelchair with the rain nearly to her knees, So I’m worried for my relative.
