I broke my Facebook account! Unable to see linked topics, but only in Chrome.

What the hell did I do?

For the past few days my Facebook feed has been showing text in some posts, but not the picture from the actual link, or even the link itself most times. I think this is affecting about a third of my feed articles.

The funny thing is that it only does this in Chrome, not on my phone and not in Firefox. Those work just fine.

Ideas?

Are you using any add-ons in Chrome like FB Purity? Try turning off all add-ons/extensions and see how it works, then turn back on one at a time.

Only Adblock, and I haven’t changed anything in that app in years.

Use this as your chance to escape its evil grasp!

Well, disable adblock and see what happens.

I suppose.

Well, there’s an octagon in the top right hand corner. Clicking on that allows you to change some AdBlock features. I paused AdBlock and previously blocked feeds suddenly appeared.

So, beats me after years of running AdBlock it would suddenly start blocking SOME Facebook posts by friends.

Weird.

Thanks! Now I need to figure out why, since AdBlock is also running in Firefox.

Did your AdBlock get updated recently? Or is there an update that you missed?

It’s not adblock. It’s Facebook. They recently declared war on Adblock. Facebook is trying to thwart Adblock, and Adblock has to come up with ways to thwart Facebook. I’d guess that your adblock got a bit too greedy in what it was blocking, or that Facebook deliberately tried to get people to turn Adblock off, and your adblocker hasn’t caught up.

I’m currently using uBlock Origin and haven’t had any problems with Facebook at all, and was surprised when I heard others had. I’ve learned they’ve they’ve added some CSS4 features that make detecting ads pretty easy, since all ads must contain certain visible text to identify them as ads.

There’s also an addon that is designed to block Facebook ads in the Chrome store, if you’d rather go that route.

I disabled AdBlock on the Facebook site for now. Not a big deal. I understand both sides of the argument, but I still hate ads.
