I saw a bumper sticker last night that referred to something utterly unknown to me. Has anyone seen this, and/or know what it is referring to?
Clean It Up OK Ted
BHP It’s Not OK
Thought this was fairly mundane (might also be pointless) so seems to belong here, not GQ.
Give us a hint – what state’s plates were on the car?
Oh, sorry. It was a Michigan plate (which is where I saw it) but it’s a pretty transient community here–people are from all over, just stopping through while they pick up a degree. A lot of people do have to change their car registration, though. So it could have originated anywhere.
I think it’s probably a reference to the OK Tedi mine in Papua New Guinea, run by a company called Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP).
Some info here
Good job, Pipe! I wouldn’t have suspected even a bumper-sticker interest in Papuan mining from some guy in Michigan, but there you go.
Now to solve the mystery of “Shit Happens”…
Damned interesting. You know, maybe it read Clean it up OK Tedi, and I saw the “I” as an exclamation mark (the thing was in all caps, no serifs)
Pretty obscure, but hey, this IS Ann Arbor. Now I wish I could find that car again. I’d follow them as if we were headed to the same destination (probably to some coffeechop, or the Food Co-op), then casually get out of my car and say “It’s a damned shame about that mine, eh?” They could marvel at my awareness.
IIRC, Forrest Gump had something to do with that one.
