I don't like losing that hour's sleep when daylight saving starts

I’m currently in Azerbaijan. We got our DST this weekend, but for unexplained reasons, it happens at 05:00 instaed of the 02:00 that the rest of the world uses. This leads to very wonky databases when we try and sync our servers with servers in the UK.

Preach it, sista. sigh

I panicked when I logged into my laptop and it told me it was adjusting for daylight saving time on the 28th. I had to go do an online search to find that it isn’t until the 4th. Stupid time weirdness.

I’m loving the fact that this Saturday night I get an extra hour of sleep- I’m running the NYC Marathon on Sunday and want to be as rested as I can be.

I screwed up big time with day light saving, I went to a friends for drinks on Saturday night and at 3am i looked at my phone and noticed that it was 3am and decided to put my time forward an our, not realizing my the phone had already put it forward an hour. So i was an hour ahead. Was correct by friends Sunday morning. I ended geting home sunday afternoon and went to sleep for a few hours woke up and realised it was kinda early still looking at clock on my wall, did my usual nightly stuff.ect went to bed. Got up monday morning and was doing my morning stuff geting ready. When i looked at my phone and noticed i hadn’t changed the clocks in my house and was running a hour late.

Daylight saing really screwed me this year, as it seems to every year!

It’s not a misprint. DST observance was extended starting this year. Well, I guess it could still be a misprint, depending on when the DST extension law was signed versus when the calendar was printed but I don’t care enough to find out when the law was changed.

My computer hasn’t updated but my elderly VCR did. I have to adjust it manually at the start and end of DST every year, and every so often in the middle of DST season the thing gets cranky and adjusts itself without provocation.

Does anyone know if the U.S. DST extension is just for this year (I hope) or is it now and for all times? I hate long DST. Why can’t we all be like Arizona?

I’ll probably have a late-night shift on Friday, which means I get to catch on sleep. Awesome.

The DST switch first happened last year. It will continue to be the first Sunday in November going forward until the Congress changes their minds.

Mine said it ended October 4. It was a free gift from heifer.org. Luckily I mentioned it to my co-workers or I would have been in an hour early.

I’m in Arizona, but my office works off Central Time. I come into the office at 7:30 am Central, which means I have to be here at 5:30 Arizona. Once DST ends, I’ll get to come in at 6:30 Arizona. I’ve been grumbling about the DST extension for a while now, I want that extra hour!

Agreed. I so hate when we lose an hour. Luckily we gain an hour next week.

But if it were up to me, we would do away with DST.

How can Arizona not do DST? I’ve finally come to accept the fact that twice a year, the entire state of ND (no one really lives there right?) get tilted up perpendicular to the the Earth and that the Star Wars LASERs that Reagan installed shoots ND to either speed up or slow down the earth to get or lose that hour. But, HOW THE HELL, does AZ not rotate with the rest of the Earth?!?

I’m so confused!

Here’s the thing. It’s not that we don’t rotate with the rest of the Earth, it’s that the rest of the Earth insists on changing its mind every six months or so. We’re always on Mountain Standard Time, after all.

According to Wikipedia, it’s because of our hot climate in the summer, especially around the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas. As a result, there is more use of air conditioners and swamp coolers compared to the rest of the nation. An extra hour of sunlight at the beginning of the day means we would run our cooling systems more, and place more strain on the power grid. By staying on standard, we keep that hour of daylight at the end of the day when temperatures are cooler and use less energy.

hows does DTS work in the usa?
How long does it go for, where, when and how much is time changed!

I don’t think you guys understand the question. Every time it gets to be this time of year, people talk about gaining an hour. In six months people would talk about losing an hour. How can you gain an hour of daylight? The only way is to slow the earth’s rotation down so it takes 25 hrs for one rotation instead of 24.

Really it was just a bad joke and an apparently poor way to say that I think DST is stupid. Just because you say it’s 1:00 when it’s 2:00 doesn’t mean that it is.

Cheaper solution: Move to the Northern Territory or Queensland.

True of most of the state, but not all. The Navajo territories observe DST (something about not letting the White Man run roughshod over traditional Native American beliefs and rituals).

Here you go. Here it’s an hour ahead in the spring (“spring forward”) and an hour backward in the fall (“fall behind”). It means if you forget, you’re an hour late in the spring or an hour early in the fall. Here are the time zones in the USA, with notes on who doesn’t observe DST.
