I don't quite get today's "Questionable Content" strip

Well, now we know where the mismatched text was from.

Why is Jeph doing a rerun of 2160? We should be on 4828 today.

Scroll up a bit, he’s not doing any new strips for the rest of the year, he’s randomly picking old strips and doing some commentary on them instead. This is actually the third one.

The website has been down since Monday, with a notice that it was “hacked and blown up”. Seems like a long time for it to be down, wonder if he’s just going to patreon instead. Given recent plotlines, one has to wonder if a secret post-singularity AI decided his strips were getting too close for comfort.

FWIW I can confirm that he’s sharing via Patreon, but he hasn’t said anything about going Patreon-only. He hasn’t mentioned the site issue since it went down.

And you can still see strips at Comics — Jeph Jacques

I’m unable to see a complete strip on that page at a readable size.

Just click on any comic and it will enlarge.

Tried that. It doesn’t work for me in Chrome (I do see the whole strip, but text is near-microscopic and refuses to be enlarged), and I tend to be annoyed by websites that get all precious about which browsers they’ll actually function correctly with.

It works for me in Brave, which is a Chrome derivative. Click on the strip and it enlarges out of the page.

Trying to decide if it’s worth changing browsers because he can’t manage to have a page that actually meets enough standards that it works correctly in what ISTR is one of the two most commonly used browsers around. I am using my laptop, BTW, since I know the strip size is going to be a problem for my eyes on either my tablet or my phone.

ETA: barely legible in Brave, not enlargeable. Either whoever built the page comics are currently shown on screwed up or he just doesn’t want middle-aged readers with imperfect vision.

Is that comics page new? It only goes back 25 strips so it’s possible its just an emergency measure until qc is back up. No screwups or malice required.

It does look like that’s a brand new page, it starts at comic 5800 and he’s adding one per day. So presumably he’s not putting much effort into formatting it and is instead putting his effort into drawing new strips & fixing the old site.

It’s not a browser thing, but a screen size thing. Clicking on it just magnifies the image to fit into the available screen space (with some rather large margins).

Whatever image view plugin he is using, it is clearly not designed for comics. I’m going to guess that, like me, the regular QC comic (on the actual website) doesn’t fit entirely into the window and you had to scroll a bit to see all of it. This image viewer does not allow this.

Clicking does not magnify on that site for me, just shows the whole comic (not the chopped-off version) at unreadably small.

FWIW, it looks like he redid the page so the comics are just jpgs that take up half the window. Or you can right click on each one and either open the jpg in another window or download & open with an image viewer. You have to scroll to the bottom to get to the most recent ones though, no index or anything.

FWIW, this morning’s Patreon email stated that the site is “still being nursed back to health” and implied that he is still working on it/doesn’t plan to abandon it.

FYI – the QC site appears back to normal this morning…

Yeah, it’s popping back up on my comic reader. I’m largely caught up though I can’t say that I really missed it for those weeks. But my bar for spending thirty seconds reading a web comic is mainly “I don’t actively hate it” and QC is still “fine” for the most part. I like Faye & Bubbles, Coffeeshop Gang is fine, Marten is Marten, I’ll never like Claire and the rest… exist. I guess if Faye & Bubbles got thrown down a well I might stop reading.

Yeah, I’ve lost interest in the last few years, haven’t warmed up much at all to the new characters or their interactions. Reading it is habit at this point. Unlike Oglaf, OOTS, SMBC and XKCD, which anticipate eagerly
