It refers to a couple of strips where a character spoke in tongues when disturbed about something (the one I remember features Dora doing it at the idea of Sven and Hanners going out on a date).
I remember Jeph saying something on Twitter about his deep, passionate love for fonts, and how some font website had a big sale and he spent tons of money. I wonder if the speaking-in-tongues is an actual font that we (read: someone else) could translate.
Marigold’s been particularly curvy the last few strips. My my.
It is an actual font, Miskatonic, a Blambot font…Gisele Legace and Dave Lumsdon also use it in Eerie Cuties, for one of the characters. But, in their case, it’s just gibberish…who knows if Jeph’s actually written anything real in it. Though, when Giz ID’d the font on the forums, she implied there’s a fairly limited number of actual characters in the font, so it’s entirely possible that it’s impossible to actually have it make sense.

Ah, Tengu’s post reveals that the font name is appropriate. I was going to link it to the current R’lyeh thread.
The first one is translatable, though there seem to be a couple of extraneous characters. The second is gibberish.
“I want to fill your scrotum with spiders and broken glass.”
I suspect that Elliot is a bizarro Marten in that he actually resembles the QC author (jacques) much more than Marten does.
Jeph is a big guy, and has commented several times that most people who see him expect someone scrawny & skinny like Marten not realizing that the characters in the comic are not based on anyone.
Heh. Maybe it is callback week after all. A Hanners freak-out (been a long time) and a dream sequence.

Note that Dream “Dora” actually has Marten’s jawline and facial structure. So it may be ChickMarten from Marten’s own dreams . . .
You must be kidding – that in no way looks like Dora. The head is pure Marten copy-paste, and the body is more, um, full-figured than Dora, and certainly heftier.
I did like the joke – Hanners wakes up in Marigold’s bed and assumes she wasn’t dreaming, although it was a bit weak. Maybe the next strip has a better payoff. Also, wasn’t ChickMarten from a guest strip, so not canon?

Just posting to point out that the Vertigo comic ‘House of Mystery’ has a back up feature this month (I picked mine up yesterday) in which the character is watching a building collapse from inside Coffee of Doom and Marten and Faye are in panel on the sidewalk. Gene Ha must be a fan.

Apparently I was thinking of this guest strip, which contains the same “wake up still dreaming” joke as #1169.
I had to go and google “ghost riding” - never heard that phrase before.
I feel older and more out of touch every day, and the sad thing is I don’t really feel like I’m missing anything…
I saw that and thought to myself, “Is that what the kids are calling it these days?” I suppose I should Google it too, cuz I have no idea either.
