This. Plus I hear it in my head to the cadence of the “Badger Badger Badger” song.
Whatever… I was going from memory that one of the male characters was possibly standing on a snapping turtle, and one had the noodle floaty.
When I went back and looked at the strip I see that Emily was also smiling; which supports what you were saying even more; plus they’re clearly moving through the water with only their heads above water as opposed to thrashing about like they’re scared. Dang it; What I don’t get is why the look worried. If they decided to play the Muskrat game, they should look like they’re having fun! Yayyyy the Muskrat Game!
I don’t think they look worried - just confused. I certainly would be. “What in the world…? Oh well, when in Rome…muskratmuskratmuskrat…”

Okay, so on a whim I’ve been reading through the archives in order, because I didn’t stop to consider that there are more than two thousand strips in there.
Anyway, this afternoon I came across the strip where Hannelore is introduced, and buh? She’s:
[ul][li]In a public restroom;[/li][li]Not freaked out (at least not visibly) by a boy being in there peeing in the sink; and[/li][li]SMOKING A CIGARETTE?![/ul] That shit just does not compute.[/li][/QUOTE]
Jeph has retconned Hanners in several ways, and at least he acknowledged it with the ‘its on the meds’ thing (even if it is a bit handwaving).
From a nit-picky standpoint I’d say there’s more of an issue with the technology of AI’s . He’s addressing what they actually are in the QC society. But its made for some inconsistent things: Momo’s present chasis, for example is obviously way more advanced than the ‘robot boyfriend’ Hanner’s dad sent to her. Jeph has stated they are similar but from different companies - but Hanner’s dad is supposed to be a super genius and the robot boyfriend was like a clamshell cell phone in the age of smart phones. Jeph hasn’t really addressed this, although I suppose he is under no obligation to do so.
I took a look at strip 1010 where the robot boyfriend appears, and it says “latest prototype.” We don’t actually see human-style chassis until strip 1996.
I have no idea how much time elapsed between those two strips (people claim there are only 47 days from start to finish in the strip’s timeline, but I’m assuming there’s only 47 days shown), but given how fast technology develops in that world compared to ours, I have no trouble believing they could have gone from prototype to commercial in that time period.
The timeline is awkward - at one point Jeph just moved things forward about 6 months (when Wil left on his journey of discovery) but it still doesn’t seem like enough time. Momo’s chasis can display facial emotions, has her defenses, and other models have been around long enough to be very popular
It just seems that we went from standard Pintsize anthroPCs to walking about models in very short order with no commentary from the rest of the crew. Odd given the attention given with Momo & Winslow’s first appearances.
There is a strip where they reference living post-technological-singularity (that is, the QC universe is post-singularity). The idea of the technological singularity (as I understand it) is that technological advancement is extremely rapid. A handwave, maybe, but an explanation, at least.
Aren’t we looking at a universe where coffee baristas are able to construct dinosaur-shaped expresso machines that apparently does some sort of dimension-hopping? Really kinda hard to make any sort of sane analysis of technological levels with that sort of thing going on.
Actually, Raven added her own quantum physics hacks to that coffee maker, not Faye. So, no, no sane analysis applies.
I always took the dad’s gift to Hannelore as part of the joke: that while he’s an absolute technological genius, he’s still a dad and therefore probably inept at building a robot boyfriend his daughter would like.
I’ve just realized: I don’t care much for Emily. I hate quirky for the sake of quirky.
I really like Emily. I also liked Padme, and Hanners is my favorite character. I like my Manic Pixie Dream Girls.
And don’t forget Raven. She’s a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in an AWESOME rack.
I’ve actually come to realize that I hate the vast majority of women in the comic, except for Hanners, the robot, and that weird nerdy girl, whatever her name.
I really should know the names better by now, I’ve been reading every day for 6 years about.
Marigold and Momo. I don’t really dislike any of the characters, except for maybe Wil, and I can’t remember the last time he was in a strip.
Nudists! OLD nudists too! Oh boy!
Ha - Jeph mentioned on his Twitter account the night of the “muskrat” strip that, “Only two ‘I don’t get today’s comic’ emails. Clearly I need to try harder.” Followed up with “If you don’t get today’s comic, you’re probably overthinking it.”
Best strip ever.
Hee hee.
If Dora and Tai had joined in, then it would have been the best strip ever.
