Cold 25 degrees at the park this morning. Jax’s chest was covered in ice because he is a sloppy drinker and all the drips froze. I was there for over 2 hours, and Echo still wanted to stay. Ripple had been long ready to come home. He likes the cold, but he likes to come home.
I forgot to plug in my hand warmer yesterday, I’ll be sure to do it today.
Next week the morning temps are supposed to be backup into the 40s.
I wanted to use a pencil Red, we have lots of pens, but not a single pencil.
Lots to do today, but probably not much will get done.
Seven ayem, and it’s still dark out. That’s Winter at the 49th Parallel.
I didn’t see the recipe that came with the absinthe, but Wifey said it was a Sazerac recipe. Bourbon instead of rye, 2:1 ratio instead of 8:1, Angostura bitters instead of Peychaud’s… I can’t call it a proper Sazerac.
Speaking of N’Awlins drinks… We were watching Across The Pacific (1943), and Sidney Greenstreet’s character offers Humphrey Bogart’s character some scotch. Pinch scotch. I had a bottle that a friend gave me many, many years ago; but I never drank it. I think I ended up giving it away. I thought, ‘Why not?’ and navigated over to BevMo! to put a bottle into my shopping cart. I was a little surprised to see things in my cart: Benedictine Liqueur, Hennessy VS cognac, and Martini & Rossi sweet vermouth. Looks like I was getting ready for Vieux Carré cocktails. I have Peychaud’s bitters here, and Costco has Bulleit rye for a good price. I’m going to hold off though, as long as we have the absinthe and bourbon.
I could have made that less of a shaggy dog story, but where’s the fun in that?
I’m sure there are several threads around here wherein flyboy and I wax rhapsodic about Frito Pie. Dating back to '03, even. Slightly more recent. Speaking of…
flyboy - Dolin sweet vermouth. Thank me later.
shoe - Glad you had a fun time. You needed it.
No fireworks around here last night, but apparently there was a major collision down the street in the middle of the night. When I went to get breakfast* just now, the debris was still in the center of the intersection. Don’t recall any sirens, so it may have just been a serious fender-bender w/o any injuries. Hope so.
The To-Do list says groceries, litter boxes and vacuum. Pegging out the Fun Meter early around here. Have a happy weekend, Mumpers! Remember the time change tonight.
Home from the marina trek. Even if that boat was not under contract, I doubt that we’d buy it, considering the amount of work it needs, most of which we’d have to contract out. But it was good to get a sense of size and space, and I think a 36’ trawler would suit just fine. FCD still wants something over 40’ but I’ve informed him that he’s wrong!
We stopped at Dickie’s in Dahlgren for lunch on the way home. Pretty pricey BBQ, plus they didn’t have carbonation for their drink machine, so we had to drink lemonade. But we has happy tummies now. In a little bit, we’ll head to RoxyLand via Food Lion - I was requested to bring a loaf of crusty bread. Had she mentioned it yesterday, I could have baked one. Oh well…
It was a nice drive, but it seemed a LOT longer coming back than going - probably because we were stahvink!! And it was a deeply red county - someone even had a picture of Trump with the caption “Miss me yet?”
OK, on to read the comics before we head to California (MD)
I use my hard-coated Teflon Calphalon frying pans a lot. I bought a 12-inch and 10-inch set. When one of the10-inch pans wore out, I bought another set; so now I have two 12-inch and two 10-inch pans. I rarely use the 12-inch ones, but the 10-inch ones are worn out and almost worn out; so I bought a pair of 10-inch pans from Amazon this morning, using a $50 gift card from work. The total after the gift card came to about $56 with free shipping.
I have a Griswold waffle iron similar to this one. I was going to put it on eBay, but SWMBO decreed we shall hang it on the wall in the kitchen. I’ve put a coat of Crisco on it, and it’s baking in the oven now. It’s hurting Wifey’s eyes.
Happy Day, Mumpers. I have very little to report. I noticed the welcome mat is still outside the downstairs neighbors’ door. Did they leave it behind, or are they still there, speaking loudly in sign language and cloistered in the guest room closet? The plot thickens.
shoe, living as you do in the western Mitten State, I’m thinking the fireworks were celebrating Let’s Get Drunk and Blow Up Shit Day. You won’t find it on a calendar because the date keeps moving, depending on alcohol consumption and people realizing they still have blow-up thingies left over from Whatchacallit. Your people apparently shared the idea with red’s, and thus a heartwarming tradition was born.
Also, shoe, you made the effort to call your dad on his birthday. If you left him a voicemail, mission accomplished.
Moooom, it’s so nice that you and FCD are able to live your retirement dreams. I’m looking forward to seeing whatever seagoing vessel you decide on and reading about your happy adventures. Oo! And what will you name it?
flyboy, I want to go liquor-shopping with you. I’m sure I’d get an education.
Is she IN the oven? Why are you using a waffle iron on her eyes? [tiptoeing backwards] You enjoy those waffles now. Take care.
Ahhhhhh… I feel better. SO MUCH BETTER than a couple of hours ago. I thought he was ignoring me.
Just got off the phone with my dad. For all the smack I talk about my mother, I do love my dad.
He was in usual “old white man” mode, but checked on my health, encouraged me to go take a walk, we chatted about the recent Northern Lights, etc. About as loving as the ol’ guy gets.
I think I’ll mosey around, snap some pics of the lovely tree colors to share with him.
Howdy Y’all! We lounged. We slothed. We napped. We watched handegg/tackleball. We et sammiches. We et some more sammiches. Now we lounge and sloth some more. Thus has been Sattidy here at da cave.
Lots of things going *boom* around here the last few days, though I didn’t go watch them, 'cos I was in Manchester watching these ladies (see Shoe’s comments on wimmin getting raunchy, but on stage with singing and political satire- I note their current tour isn’t listed on wiki yet, huh). I also threw a bit of shopping and looking round in, plus some eating at nice places. Been yonks since I went to Manchester- I think it’s improved in recent years, and it’s a heck of lot cheaper than Bristol…
It was one of those things I would never have even considered getting tickets for- a friend had a spare and a spare bed nearby- but I really enjoyed it. It’s the first time I’ve seen my friend in nearly 2 years as well, and the first time we’ve met up outside of a juggling event.
nellie, here in the mid-south, we don’t set a special day just for getting drunk and blowing up shit. It’s an anytime thang.
Got some really good bargains with the Marketplace buys. I helped the lady with the estate sale price some of the things leftover (this was her mother’s estate and she was clueless what she could get with the craft stuff). She gave me a small discount for that.
Nelson finished last evening’s pup cup of peanut butter while we were out and is now stinkin’ the joint up. I took him to the dog park when we returned, then we swung by the cheap Chinese down the street for house special soup and pork dumplings. Now for some chill time in the studio.
That’s always the $64000 question. There are far too many stupid boat names out there (FCD threatens to write a book of stupid boat names…) Stuff like Conference or Surgery, so when someone asks, you can truthfully answer “I’m sorry, I’ll be in Surgery that day…” ha ha so funny.
The coolest boat name we ever encountered was Effie O’Two - on a steel boat. It took a second to get it.
The only two of ours I remember are Wandering Star and Draco. I think one was called Friendship, but we scraped that off the hull. We kept threatening to call one of them Entropy. But we’ll just have to see what happens. I’ll be very surprised if we can even get one this year, but who knows…
Meanwhile, we’re home from a slightly delayed birthday dinner at our daughter’s. She made a really yummy stew and a devil’s food cake from scratch! Roxy helped decorate it, and if you’re my FB friend, you can see her and her grandpa blowing out the candles. FCD is in his recliner icing his knee. I shall assume the knit position shortly. It’s been a long, largely non-productive day. No clue what tomorrow holds.
