I Got Nuttin’… The Worst Ever MMP

How to eat a star fruit. No need to thank me. I live to ejyookate.

I haven’t had any teeth pulled since my wisdom teeth at the age of 22 … and before that it was for the braces. But, never fun. How was the starfruit? I bought them once to put on the sides of tropical drinks … purty! But bland. They’re supposed to be very sweet, if you get a good one. We’ve been inhaling Clementines lately – yummy little tangerines, and pears. Fruit is big in Casa Cherry.

Oh and while I’ve got you Mindfield, do you think putting my Treo680 in my husband’s 650 charger has killed the battery? It’s definitely made it lose a charge faster, but will it Heal Itself, or is it kaput, in your esteemed opinion? I thought it was a goner, but now we’re wondering if it will bounce back.

Lots of snow here today in Kain-tuck.

Wha? [channeling James Brown] I feel good, I knew that I would, now! [/JB]

I got a hyuuuge bonus directly deposited into my bank account. The most we’ve ever been given! It’s a profit sharing kind of thing. Woo-hoo! Since I’ve been off work, I wasn’t sure if it was a mistake or what. I didn’t know we were getting a bonus! It’s bigger than my regular paycheck!

I have to go watch the shows I recorded last night - Grey’s and ER - so I can come back here and read the threads. I swear, I have no life…

Later!

Hello again all! And a special hello to the new comer, Heff.

Meli was right, I was trying to avoid mentioning my birthday, but now that its out thanks for all the b-day wishes.

Birthdays (and holidays in general) have never been a big thing for me. Oh, sure, my family would celebrate the big ones in a fairly standard way, homemade meal, cake, presents, etc. but I don’t think that any of my friends have ever known when my birthday is before. And this was the way I liked it. None the less I must say I truly enjoyed the fact that everyone seemed to know about it yesterday. Not only the large, colorful acknowledgments here, but all of our friends at the campus writers’ club made a big deal about it (with a fair number of ‘old man’ comments begin thrown around). It was a nice change of pace.

Swampy - Well thankee. I’m pleased to note that I evidently picked a good starfruit, based on that article’s criteria. Light brown ribs, shiny, yellowy skin, pretty even colour. I’m a good fruit-picker, I am.

Ellen - I have declared the starfruit good eatin’. Juicy, sweet with a hint of tartness. No core to speak of, just a thin bit of stringiness and two thin, slippery seeds. The rest was perfectly – I daresay enthusiastically edible. Yum! The description in Swampy’s link is pretty accurate; it’s a bit of pear, yellow plum, and maybe just the merest hint of pineapple, but with a bit of a unique texture. Very nice, all things considered.

As to your Treo – I have a 680 as well, and unfortunately, there’s a problem with battery calibration. Aside from the fact that it has 33% less juice than the 650 did due to it having a 1200mAh battery compared to the 650’s 1800mAh, it also can’t seem to read the battery level properly out of the box. Your Treo isn’t actually losing juice, it simply thinks it is. There is also an issue some have reported that the camera is drawing power from the battery even when it isn’t in use. For this part, Palm has quietly issued a patch to address the camera issue.

Proper battery calibration has this semi-official fix (as detailed by someone from Palm customer support):

  1. Perform an “in-cradle reset.” Plug your 680 into the sync/charge cable (make sure it’s plugged into the wall adapter, too) and then remove the battery and wait two or three minutes.
  2. Remove the SIM card. Wait another two or three minutes.
  3. Re-insert the battery without the SIM card (closing the SIM tray first of course), replace the cover, and let it sit and charge for 6-8 hours, still connected to the charge cable. Do not press ANY buttons. If you are running any hacks, disable them when you re-insert the battery by holding UP on the 4-way navigator while it reboots.
  4. Once it’s sat for 6-8 hours, remove the battery, re-insert your SIM card, replace the battery and let it reboot.
  5. Remove charge cable.

This is supposed to fix the problem. No mention was made on whether you needed to let the battery drain down first, but I would do that anyway so it has the benefit of a full drain/charge cycle. I have not done this fully yet myself but I am going to do so this weekend and see if it works. Your hubby’s 650 cradle shouldn’t have anything to do with it – I have the one Palm Treo cradle at home for both my 680 and the wife’s 650 and it works great.

Eating Vicks? I would think it would be toxic or something. It smells toxic…

My stomach is not liking the mention of eating Vick’s.

Ugh.

Ok, well, whoever’s sick… get better. Whoever’s feelin’ good, don’t get sick. BTW, Rebo my sources tell me James Brown ain’t feelin none too good as of late.

Mindy, when you say to put it in the charger, can Ellen use her husband’s?

We ordered Chinese food for llunch today. Amber Eye-Candy just left to pick it up. Since I have a pork roast in the crock pot at home, I got the L5.

Is the L5 the cat or the dog?

Sean - If by “charger” you mean “cradle” then no. It isn’t that it won’t work, it’s that you can’t get at the battery to remove it (the 680’s only reset-method) while it’s on the cradle, so that’s why I suggested the sync/charge cable. The phone would have come with a sync/charge cable and AC adapter (the cradle is an optional accessory and is sold separately) so she can use that. (The sync/charge cable and the cradle for the 650 is the same “universal connector” used on almost all OS5 Palm handhelds, including all Treo models excluding the 700w/wx and the 750, which are Windows Mobile machines and connect up a bit differently to the PC)

rigs - I’m not doing too well with the Vick’s snack either. I wish she hadn’t told me. Now I keep thinking about it and shuddering involuntarily.

winces at loud letters I had some alcohol myself last night. No need to be unnecessarily cruel. puts on pathetic face

Today I have my thesis writing workshop, but after that I am freeeeeeeeee. Yay for weekends!

And did you otherwise behave yourself, young lady?

Mynd Thanks. It wasn’t clear to me,and I’m thinking about upgrading my Palm to a new unit. Just wondering how much of a PITA it would be to go with the Treo.

swampy All I care is that it isn’t the pork.

I’m thinking of going to that Scandanavian store up at Potomac Mills tomorrow. If’n the roads are gonna be bad, I’m not gonna do it. The GF saw an iron bed in their catalogue that she likes, and the price is outrageously low. I’d like to look at it before we order, but the nearest store is 3+ hours away. Any of your DC’ers know how the roads are expected to be? We’ll be taking I-95 north from Richmond.

But … not according to Palm!

From Palm site

You have tasted the bitterness as well
as the sweetness of coffee

Not likely. I drink it black. Bitterness, yes, but not sweet.

Sean - It’s not much of a PITA. As long as you keep the same hotsync name, it’s generally just a matter of syncing with the new unit. This is not always advised depending on what model of Palm you have right now as you don’t want to inadvertently sync incompatible apps or especially hacks, but if you don’t have much installed and are sure it’s compatible (most OS5 apps are cross-compatible with other OS5 units, with only few exceptions) then you can get away with a plain sync with the new unit. This is how I do it and it’s never failed me.

Ellen - Sorry, I was referring specifically to the connector itself; the cradles are shaped differently for different units so it isn’t one-size-fits-all. The sync/charge cables are almost all universal though. (The main exception is the Zire72 which uses mini USB instead of the Palm Universal Connector; there is no cradle for the Zire72) IIRC the Treo 600 is also different as that and earlier models are Handspring units with a different sync/charge connector.

The Treo 650 cradle however is also compatible with the 680 and 700p.

Blah. Missed the edit time window.

Sean - Is your current phone GSM or CDMA?

Ellen - If it lends me any credibility, I’ve owned 7 Palm devices since 2002. (Vx, m505, Sony Clie’ SJ33, Zire72, Tungsten|T5, and our current Treo 650 and 680 units) I’ve pretty much run the gamut.

Good morning everyone.

For those of you feeling icky, I hope you get well soon.

Have I mentioned how much I HATE MapPoint 2006? It is the stupidest program ever! I cannot find an instructional manual for it anywhere.

My boss wants me to map certain segment of our bennie population by zip code. Okay, that’s easy enough, I can import those zips and have them show up on the map. However, he ALSO wants the population of each zip code to show in the map. I cannot figure out how to do this. At one point, I gave up and started manually inserting the population numbers in a text box for each zip code. However, you cannot really readjust the font size much there, so what happened was that basically the text boxes covered the other pertinent info and it was useless. So, then I thought, fine, I’ll just have the zip population show in a legend off to the side. Nope, no dice. It won’t let you do that.

I’ve gone to every site I can think of for help. There is none to be had. The “Help” files that come with the program SUCK. Have I mentioned how much I HATE MapPoint 2006? I HATE, HATE, HATE it. Ugh!

FCM, I had a PHB boss at one point. The irony is that he LOVED Dilbert. I think he took lessons from the PHB in Dilbert. Do you know that he once told me to complete an analysis of my analysis? I kid you not. I created a Pit thread about it.

Well, back to pulling my hair out over MapPoint 2006. Did I mention how much I HATE it?

<snerk> IN BED! <snerk>

Coffee in bed could be either very sensual or potentially life threatening. Use at your own risk.

Mindfield I have one of the non-telephonic ones right now (quite possibly an m505. It’s in my car right now.) But I’m thinking of consolidating to one unit for phone/organizer/PDA.

But is your phone CDMA or GSM? That would make up your mind as to which Treo to get. The 680 is only available in GSM (i.e. AT&T/Cingular, T-Mobile) while the 700p is only available in CDMA (Verizon, Virgin).
