Most of what passes for “breakfast food” in our Western culture is yucky. Eggs taste like sulphur, cereal and pancakes raise my blood sugar and make me feel yucky, donuts are yummy but c’mon, they’re not a proper meal, they’re dessert. The Japanese have it right. Fish and rice or a bowl of soup for breakfast is much more my speed.
I’m not usually hungry at this time, but I have to eat something because if I just drink my coffee on an empty stomach I get all swoony.
I try to eat something that I like with protein in it that will keep my blood sugar even and give me energy for a long time but it’s a lot of work and I’m tired because my coffee hasn’t even kicked in yet.
Nobody said breakfast had to be traditional breakfast food. I actually do a broccoli and eggs combo half the time. I’m gluten-intolerant and broccoli is a great replacement for bread. It’s a complex carbohydrate so I don’t the the sugar-rush issue, plus it has calcium and fiber. The eggs are for protein. But you could easily do a small salad for breakfast.
I’ve never been a breakfast person either. For the last two years though I’ve had to get up at 5:30 on weekdays and I can’t make it to lunch without eating. (I’m used to getting up at 7:30’ish.) I’ve been having a granola bar and a piece of fruit with my morning coffee and it’s worked out nicely for me.
So why not have fish and rice in the mornings if that’s what you prefer? The Man can’t tell You what to eat. Fight the power!
Or is the problem more that you can’t get fish & rice in the morning at established eateries and you don’t want to make it yourself?
ETA: Re-read #3. Perhaps make something with dinner the night before that you can pop into the oven or a pan to heat back up? Do they have rice steamers with timers these days? If not, perhaps invent one!
I don’t mind a meal when I get up, but I do prefer non-standard breakfast foods. If I’m out a restaurant, I’ll be the one who will order a burger if possible.
I hate eating before around 10:30 in the morning or so. Doesn’t matter what time of day I got up. I usually just drink coffee until I feel like I can tolerate food, and then I have a little something.
My preferred breakfast food is leftover rice and veg from last night’s dinner, if available. Leftover teriyaki chicken for breakfast is the bomb.
One of my coworkers and I are early birds and while we don’t hate traditional breakfast foods, neither of us hesitates to start the day with whatever the he’ll we want. It’s 3:45AM and we’re the only people on our floor, grunting what passes for pleasantries as soup, leftover corn on the cob, Chinese food or a calzone heats up in one of the microwaves in the kitchen. Eat whatever you might pack for a lunch. It works out fine.
Well shit, then, eat a bowl of rice and fish for breakfast. I eat whatever I want for whatever meal I want. A staple of our house is breakfast for dinner - eggs, pancakes, ham, whatever, for dinner. I’m eating frozen White Castle sliders for breakfast right now…
Yum!
ETA : I also often am not hungry in the morning, fat as I am, and don’t eat until 10 or 11 AM, waking up at 5.
is highly insulting.
I have a feeling if you had said something so cavalier about other foods, you would be called out on it, as well you should be. I really think you should apologize for saying this. I mean, really, “Frying optional.”? No way in hell. It must be fried.
I do a “bootcamp” workout class 4 or 5 mornings a week, and I’ll have a little something before I go (tea & a piece of toast w/ peanut butter usually) but I’m starving when I come home, and I know I need a protein fix. I love eggs, but not every morning, so one of my alternates is a can o’ tuna with a titch of mayo, a squeeze of lemon, and a dash of Old Bay or some fresh ground pepper. No sandwich, just eat it straight out of the bowl with a Triscuit or two for some crunch. Yum!
Oatmeal sounds like something you could probably find easily and cheaply, and doctor up to your personal taste.
Plus, it has a low glycemic index, loads of fiber, and a moderate amount of protein- it does definitely stick with you and doesn’t crazily raise your blood sugar.
Dang, my tastes couldn’t be more opposite. Eggs only taste like sulfur if they’re rancid. To me, a fried egg (with the yolk hardened) is very tasty, even without salt or any other seasoning. Bacon…mmmmm…bacon… Oatmeal and cold cereal are kind of bland but those require no effort to make.
The only food mentioned in the OP that I don’t like are donuts. Sure they are sweet and fatty, but they settle in my stomach like a rock and make everything else taste like crap.
I like traditional breakfast, but I also like “non-traditional” breakfast. I might get pilloried for being a food perv, but I’ve been known to eat whatever leftover meat from the night before; chicken wings, steak, pork chops, hamburger, Chinese food, etc. Fried fish is awesome for breakfast, but I’m usually not inclined to make that.
