What's your breakfast?

I pretty much stopped eating breakfast about 15 years ago. But with me about to hit the big three-oh and finally getting a regular job I’m thinking I’d better start. So I was wondering what are the good pick you up things to do in the morning. Hot sex, cold shower, hot coffee, cold cereal, what works for you.

I suppose I should also ask what to avoid. What things put you down before eleven?

Juice, oatmeal, toast with jelly.
Sometimes I suck down a “Jolt” cola driving to work as “desert”

toast with smooth peanut butter and apple jelly.

half a glass of kool-aid or the generic equivalent.

Today it was juice and a couple of Eggo waffles. I just don’t have much energy to spare cooking right after I get up, operating a toaster is about as complex as I can manage. One of my recent favorites has been a toasted whole wheat bagel spread with a thin layer of vegemite then garlic & chive cream cheese. Yum.

I’m self-employed and work at home. When I’m left to my own devices, I stumble out of bed and directly into my office, where I work until my stomach complains loudly enough and I finally give in and feed it, any old thing, usually junk: cookies, a can of soda, chips/salsa, last night’s leftovers.

Fortunately, I have a hubby who enjoys the morning ritual of preparing a little nibbly breakfast, and whatever he puts in front of me, I will eat. This is usually some combination of the following:

Juice (orange or cranberry)
Shot of pom juice
Apple slices (Gala or Golden Delish)
Red seedless grapes
Assorted sliced cheeses (Gouda, Edam, cojack, Muenster)
Bagel, English muffin, or toast
Cup of yogurt, if I’ve bought any
And sometimes even a little chocolate cookie

(His breakfast is the same, except sans yogurt and with an espresso and/or latte. I don’t do coffee.)

I often put the large juice back in the fridge for later, because I get enough from the fruits.

And yes, I do appreciate this service!

All this prep-heavy stuff might not work for you. But sometimes I’ll just toast a muffin and slice up an apple if (horrors!) I have to make my own breakfast.

Frosted Mini-Wheats with soy milk nearly every day. I’m not a morning person and am not usually very hungry first thing in the AM. But this routine keeps me out of the vending machines at mid-morning, and has also served to drop both my coffee consumption and my cholesterol.

All by accident… I’m no fitness buff.

Big-ass Starbucks coffee, made at home, with Splenda and Coffee Mate, and a Q-Smart Snack Bar. The other half of the time I have two soft-boiled jumbo eggs, two pieces of Pepperidge Farm Carb Style white toast with Take Control margarine spead, and coffee.

32-oz or 44-oz Diet Coke refill from the 7-11. Lo-carb food bar (e.g., Atkins or Carb-Wise, etc.). This is about 6:00.

I eat lunch around 11:00. I find this is sufficient.

Workdays: A double shot of espresso, 1 cup of Fiber One, plain, and a large mug of iced tea (to ensure the Fiber One doesn’t cause a bowel obstruction).

Weekends: English muffin, toasted, with margarine, vegemite, melted aged cheddar cheese, warm summer sausage, a poached egg, and Tabasco Chipotle sauce. Yum!

Some kind of whole grain cereal (Wheaties or Total) with Ultra-Skim milk. Couple slices of bacon. Large mug of coffee.

Every once in a while, me or hubby will get a bug and cook: whole wheat pancakes or french toast; omelets (hubby’s specialty, not mine); bacon or sausage.

I have no preferences. I ate a burrito for breakfast today, the day before I had a protein drink. Usually I dont eat breakfast though.

Multi-grain Cheerios with soy milk and blueberries.
or
Health food store cereal (mixed grains with flax seed) with yogurt and blueberries.
or
Nutri-grain waffles with yogurt and fruit.
or
Cold leftover pizza.

With a couple of mugs of hot tea with milk.

Breeek…fayst? What is this strange concept?

Seriously though, I usually have no time in the mornings to grab breakfast before I run out the door. I tend to make up for it on the weekends though: pancakes/waffles, scrambled eggs with cheese, sausage.

Its enough to make my arteries go “Aaaaaah, the pain! We need more!”

I am not a coffee drinker at all, so I have to have something in the morning to eat or else my body just doesn’t wake up. Usually it will consist of a bowl of cereal (Cheerios or Wheaties) with milk. Once in awhile I stop by McDonalds and get a sausage buscuit with egg with a milk.

I never eat breakfast at home. Once I get to school and into my classroom, I usually wander over to the Cafeteria and grab a Breakfast Burrito or some French Toast sticks. That and water get me through the morning.

Cereal, mostly. Sometimes I’ll make myself a fruit salad, but doing so is rather time consuming for a fast morning, so I resort to cereal. I usually have juice or green tea with my breakfast.

About an hour of reading email, online comics, the Straight Dope, and the Neopets daily rounds.

Metrix protein shake, a fruit bar, and several cigarettes.

Heh. I’m lucky if I get a (free) cup of tea at the workplace galley, or maybe cocoa.

I haven’t eaten breakfast during the week probably in 30 years. I usually fire up the espresso machine and have a triple with a tablespoon of half and half.

Sometimes on a nice Sunday morning I’ll make an egg-in-the-hole.

Take a slice of bread, and butter it.
Find a shot glass and cut yourself out a porthole in the bread.
When your non-stick pan is hot, put down the bread, butter side down. Put the circle next to it.
When it starts to brown, crack the egg into the circle.
When you can’t stand it anymore, flip the whole thing over. Don’t break the yolk, and feel very proud of yourself.
When the whole thing looks done, slide onto a plate, and neatly put the circle of now-toasted bread over the yolk.
Voila, egg-in-the-hole.
