Ye, the teeming millions have hectored me with the Threatening Voice of Homer Simpson to start a Stargate SG-1 thread. This, after RexDart seemed to dismiss the Show as lacking in popularity since it is one of those lesser TV offerings that do not number among those “one-hour shows with continuing storylines, since they have the most people who want/need to discuss/clarify the events taking place and their fit into the story.”
Are we going to stand for this? In the words of Teal’c: “In my culture, I would be within my rights to dismember you now”.
Phht. I’m happy enough to watch it as background noise, but it amazes me that it has such a low reputation – I know that broadcasters (to their own surprise) rate it almost as highly as The Simpsons and Star Trek re-runs in the UK in terms of ‘draw’.
I think it’s a great show! Unfortunately, it’s now owned by the SciFi channel in the US. They’ll ruin it for sure, just like they’ve ruined Farscape. Bastards.
Well, I am glad you came to your senses and started the thread.
I got hooked on this show about six months ago or so. Whenever it started coming on before “Farscape”. I knew it had a fan following, but never had bestirred myself to see it. But since it came on before “Farscape”, (which I was seeing anyway), and since it replaced “The Invisible Man”, (which I regularly watched before was cancelled), I ended up watching it kinda by default. The presence of Richard Dean Anderson in the show made this decision a little easier as well.
It has grown on me. I don’t really know the back story or anything, but I guess they are showing reruns on SciFi so it’s my own fault that I’m not watching them.
I know that the episode that really did it for me was the “geeks” episode. (Episode titled “The Other Guys”, as described on this site.) That was absolute hilarity. I cannot even express how much I loved that episode. (My favorite line: when one of the geeks thought he was about to meet his death, his “final” words to his geek friend are, “Take care of my cats, OK?”) Oh my gosh, that was priceless.
The sense of humor is good in the show too. Some of the stories are so-so, but the interaction between the characters keeps me watching the show.
I agree. A lot of sci-fi shows leave me drumming my fingers waiting for a space battle or something. With SG-1 I prefer the banter amoung the main characters.
I had heard that the current season (including the new shows starting Jan 10) were going to be the last, but I see from the home page on yosemitebabe’s link that they’ve confirmed a seventh season.
YES! THANK YOU!
I think SG-1 is one of the best SF series I’ve ever seen. The character interactions and use of humor are excellent, the storylines are not all “disaster of the week” but range from profound to silly, and they’re not afraid to poke fun at themselves (Wormhole X-treme! - particularly the “out-takes” at the end - had me in stitches).
I have already replaced my taped copies with the first two season boxed DVD sets, and will be buying the others as they come out.
