I never watched Scrubs while it was on one of the major networks but I catch some episodes in syndication. I noticed the show was available on Netflix streaming so I went ahead and finished up the series all the way up until the final season. I really enjoyed the show even though the romance between J.D. and Elliot got pretty annoying sometimes. The jokes were generally funny when things got serious the writers and actors handled it rather well. The last season was simply horrible and I don’t know what they were thinking. Putting Sacred Heart hospital in a medical school and changing most of the cast just didn’t work for me. The show had run its course and it should have ended J.D. leaving Sacred Heart for his new job. I couldn’t even get through the last season and stopped watching before J.D. left the show.
Any idea why the actress who played Carla never made an appearance in the last season?
The last season was basically a Spin Off in all but name. Bill Lawrence (the creator) wanted to call it Scrubs Med and make it a different show but ABC wanted it to be Scrubs so it was. I seem to recall at least one episode that season actually had the word “Med” in small letters but I could be wrong.
Yeah, the last season doesn’t exist for me. I have the DVDs from Season 1 to Season 8, and only put those in for marathon sessions. Season 1, 2, and 3 were great, but they got a little too into the “stoner comedy” in season 4 and 5 (they even acknowledged this in the commentaries)… I mean, JD was getting stuffed into a backpack, and it wasn’t even during a daydream!
Season 6 and 7 were an improvement, but season 8 was absolutely fantastic. I really liked how Dr. Cox became the new Kelso and JD had to take on Dr. Cox’s role. That’s what Dr. Cox had been training his “newbie” for all those years and it finally came to fruition!
The season 9 “spin off” would have been okay if Bill Lawrence had actually been able to convince ABC to let it become an actual spinoff with a different name. Too bad that Lawrence had zero integrity and didn’t just walk away from it when ABC wouldn’t let him (the creator!) run the show like he wanted to. You know nothing good comes out of heavy handed executives who meddle in creative people’s works. Oh well… for me, the series ends (perfectly) with JD’s last daydream actually having the possibility of coming true.
Yes, it says “Med School” down in the lower right corner of the X-ray at the end of the opening credits. It’s Bill Lawrence’s way of forcing it to be a spin off.
I like the last year, but it is totally a spin off. Wish it had succeeded.
I really liked season 8 as well. I liked how Perry changed (although he was still an ass), I liked the interns and I thought it was generally funny. I think the Gooch is super cute! I don’t think Scrubs Med School would have worked even if it had been a real spin off show. I didn’t need a “new” show that was pretty much the same as the old show. It still had some funny jokes in it but I think I was about through with the series as a whole which is why I couldn’t finish season 9.
This thread inspired me to watch season 8 again. I forgot how much I loved that scene where the Janitor is screwing with Dr. Cox and but then hammers at the right time to emphasize the Big Cheese’s points.
