I just came home from the Apple Store. I got a shiny new I-Mac G-5 with a 1.8GHz processor. Its faster than my Corvette… okay, it isn’t, but almost! It has a cool flat screen that magicly hold all the wiry bits. The CD/DVD read/writer is cleverly hidden on the edge. Its a little like the magic trick where the magician pulls stuff out of your ear. Only it disappears instead.
I also got a new Epson printer. That’s because it was FREE with the I-Mac. Well, its a full price rebate.
My old G-3 is in the hospital having a major OS transplant. (That’s why I was at the Apple Store.) It will be a back-up/archive storage unit when it comes home. It will be jealous, but it shouldn’t have betrayed me the way it did.
A MAC USER!!!
- hisses with disdain…
Ha ha. Just kidding.
This thing I want to know with the new G5 is, is it noisy?
I would assume so, since they pack everything together.
But, thats great. Its always nice to get a new shiny toy.
Its absolutely silent. I was amazed. I decided to add RAM up front, and the Apple Store was so busy, it would have been 4 hours to have it installed. I did it myself, so I got a look inside. Its very neat and well organized. I was told it is entirely user upgradable.
It has everything the G-5 tower has, except the RAM slots. But It will go to 2 gigs of RAM.
At the risk of sounding like my neighbor across the lake*, when will I ever need 2 gigs of RAM?
- Bill Gates, years ago, said “Who would ever need more than 64 MEGs of hard drive space?”
He was wrong, I could be wrong too, but I doubt it well be in my lifetime.
I think you’re wrong there – it only took a year for 512 megs of RAM to become standard. I bet within 5 we’ll be well into recommended amounts of RAM being in the tens of gigs.
512 is standard? Why, then, do all the new Macs come with only 256? I bought an extra 512, so I now have 768. Well, you’re probably right. I’m just an old woman not willing to face facts. sigh.
I’m still exploring my new toy. (I just named the hard drive Mary’s Toys)
I’m so intrigued with the flat screen. Why didn’t I know it would be soft? If I touch it my finger makes a “dent” in what ever is on the screen. (no, I’m not poking it anymore.)
I’m finding things that are supposed to be assets that I hate. I’m using Safari as my browser now. It works great. I used Netscape on the old G-3 so I never saw the “mouse over” feature here on the board. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a revolt! I hate it! I keep losing my place because it gets in the way. But every thing else is great. I’m using a much small font, but the text is clearer and more readable then I’ve ever seen it.
Ok, I’ve gushed enough…you can go back to your own lives now if you like…
Actually, what Gates said was:
640KB RAM was the standard for MS-based PCs for years. Every version of MS-DOS and Windows would use no more than 640KB of RAM in the standard memory configuration. If I remember correctly, extended memory came along when Windows 3.1 was released and needed more RAM to run more complex programs. But Windows itself never used more than 640KB RAM until Windows 98 came along.
Now that I’ve said that, I’m sure some other more knowledgable person will come along and correct me on that statement…
And remember, friends don’t let friends buy Macs.
Where were your friends?
Seriously, congratulations. Sounds way cool.
