I just had a Little Debbie Swiss Roll for the first time in my life

how the hell has this thread made it this far without a link to this song

I just sighted some of those at a Walmart here (I’m in California, so had only heard of these, largely via the Stephanie Plum books). Next time I’m there, I should probably buy a box. I hate the cutesy spelling they use, but I hear the snack cakes are quite good.

Little Debbie is apparently trying to satisfy people’s Twinkie urges with their Cloud Cakes. I’ve seen them in Wal-Mart, but haven’t picked up a box. Wal-Mart also has their own brand of pseudo-Twinkies under their Great Value label. I haven’t had a chance to try them, but if I do, I’ll report back on whether they’re a worthwhile substitute.

I’m primarily interested to see if someone makes a faux-Twinkie that has banana-cream filling. I’m not sure if it would be a good thing or a bad thing, since I really don’t need to be eating them, but still, I’m interested. Very, very interested.

And now Critical1 has me off on another Youtube safari, this time in search of Southern Culture on the Skids.

I liked the banana Twinkies. Hostess also made chocolate and strawberry filled Twinkies.

It was good. So good that I have had to resist terrible urges to get another box, knowing that the slightest yielding might result in an unstoppable chain of events that would imperil my svelte figure, and perhaps my soul.

My 4-year-old daughter calls them “brown snacks”. As in, “Grandpa lets me eat brown snacks for breakfast.”

I remember the strawberry filled ones, those were good!

I saw the Mrs. Freshley brand has come out with their own version of Zingers. I may have to try them, strictly for research purposes of course.

Makes me think of the time I was kicked out of the Boy Scouts for eating a Brownie.

The thought of a *lower-quality *twinkie is sort of mind blowing. I mean, how does one cut corners when producing a twinkie?

I went to Wal-Mart today and bought a box of the not-Twinkies (mainly because they were 50¢ cheaper than Little Debbie’s Cloud Cakes) and they are actually quite good. The sponge cake is sweet and moist and the filling is nice and creamy. I had to restrain myself to keep from gobbling one down in two bites. It didn’t taste like any corners were cut at all. They compare pretty favorably with the Hostess version. A very good replacement if the real Twinkies don’t make a comeback.

Surely the Twinkies recipe is out there somewhere. Or is it a closely guarded secret like the Coke formula and McDonald’s special sauce?

I suspect the corners they cut included spending much less on TV commercials.

Around my neck of the woods, they were Mickey’s Banana Flips. Kind of like a banana cream, sponge cake taco. I would lick the excess filling around the edges (little did I know I was acquiring a useful skill for later in life…:D) before devouring the entire thing. I haven’t seen them in years but once in a great while I’ll encounter one in a service station mini-mart in the middle of nowhere and I embarrass myself by my excitement and end up purchasing all on the wire rack display.

And I remember fondly with longing for the days when I could eat Swiss Rolls, Donut Sticks and Zebra Cakes.
:(:(:(:frowning:

::sniffle::

This is really a good thread, the idea that a grown-up has been mistreated and denied the joy of a swiss roll makes me a little sad though. Thank goodness for curiosity and the use of free will is still available. Nice job Potato, glad to see your smile, dont let the tofu get the edge on you again, its OK to know other stuff beside what’s good for you.
