I just realized how much I hate the phase "speak out." (lame)

I just saw it yet again, in a headline about the Conrad Black trial jurors.

My distaste for the phrase “speak out” has now reached full fledged loathing. I’m not sure I can exactly describe why I hate it so much - I’m sure it’s connected somehow with who does it, and/or how often it is done, and/or where they tend do it (jurors and celebrities, very often, and on TV news in all its forms, respectively).

If I can articulate why I hate it so much, I will do so. But for now, just know that given unlimited power, eternal torture for any copywriter or talking head who uses that phrase would be mandatory.

Mike Royko was once driven to write a column decrying this very phrase when he read a tabloid headline, “Reggie Jackson Speaks Out on his Sex Life”.

Leaper, don’t hold back! Speak out! Don’t let the anger fester in your soul, man. Speak out and be free.

At the end of the day, you have to step up to the plate and speak out.

First cousin to “speak out” is “raise awareness”. Both of those remind me of the unpleasant sensation of chewing aluminum spitballs.

I once “spoke in” and let me tell you, it was a pretty painful experience that I don’t plan to try again…ever.

So please, think twice before you condemn “speak out”.

Just as irritating to me is the phrase “come together”, usually as spoken by some glurgey please-think-of-the-children type of local militant mom after a disaster.

“The community has to come together to speak out against violence in our schools!”

Um, like up until now, everybody has been for violence in school or something.

Wait, don’t forget to throw in, “…and raise awareness!”, as in, “The community has to come together to raise awareness and speak out against violence in our schools!”

Damn, you beat me.

THAT is my most hated phrase.

I think raising awareness has to happen before coming together. Then the speaking out.

And of course, once you speak out, you can Speak Your Own Truth.

I just wanted to say that it’s good to see you back here. I hope everything’s good.
