I gave up on this show a while back but got bored and picked up where I left off. Watched another season or so and last night got to the one where…
Debbie the teenage daughter was working a scab job as a welder and a big piece of pipe falls on her foot, crushing her three smallest toes. She goes to the ER and the doctor tells her it will cost some huge amount to have a surgeon try to save the toes (she’s uninsured of course) and there will be a long recovery time. If she doesn’t do anything she’ll probably get gangrene and lose the whole foot. Debbie asks how much to just amputate the toes and that too seems out of reach. Some other stuff happens. Cut to the Gallagher kitchen. Debbie is sterilizing some garden pruners over a flame. She tells her little brother (about ten) it’s time to do this. Then she takes a bunch of valium and a long hit of vodka and hands Liam the pruners. Liam starts to do what needs doing but passes out. Debbie also passes out from the valium and vodka. The alcoholic father, Frank stumbles in drunk. Not knowing what’s going on, he walks over, looks at Deb’s foot (really looks bad), snips off the toes with the pruners then heats up a table knife over the stove, cauterizes the wounds, takes a pull off Deb’s vodka bottle and stumbles off to bed.
A totally Gallagher moment.
