Shameless season 4 (open spoilers)

There isn’t a thread yet? So far it looks like it’s off to a good start. It’ll be interesting to see Fiona working a normal office job, at least while it lasts. Her new boyfriend is hotter than Jimmy. Carl giving Frank wine enemas and jerking off while he was in the room was pretty strange though, even for this show. It’s also strange that nobody seems to care about Ian disappearing. Cameron Monaghan renewed his contract, didn’t he? And let’s not forget about Kev & Veronica & Veronica’s mother.

(bump)

Is anyone else watching? Debbie’s storyline just got a whole lot creepier and I’m starting to wonder if the producers might really be willing to kill Frank. His secret other daughter is his only shot a new liver, and there’s still the matter of getting Medicaid to pay for it (and I imagine keeping up with the post-transplant regimen would be rather difficult while homeless).

The reveal that Frank has another daughter came as a shock to me, but I’m not sure why. He probably has a whole slew of children across the country.

Debbie’s storyline is definitely getting creepier. I’m not sure where the writers are going to go with it.

Do you think Vi is going to terminate her pregnancy?

Debbie’s story seems to playing out pretty fitting with the world of the show. I doubt Fiona was a virgin much past 14 and Debbie’s getting there. I can’t decide if he’s an outright creeper or if he’s just a little weird. He definitely begged off sex with Debbie in a nice way with some lame excuses.

Regarding Vi’s pregnancy…is the show going to go on much further? If the show is going to end after a 5th season, I could see them having her lose the pregnancy. Otherwise it gives her a story to pop in and out of.

Lips situation is interesting. They are going down some tried and true poor kid at college stuff. Him sticking with it is good. I get balking at the 200 for a barebones laptop, but that just reminds me that they are completely uneven with his character throughout the show. He built a wireless CC number swiper in a previous episode… he can’t get it together to afford a laptop? He’s super smart and scammy, but only when it doesn’t matter.

Fiona and the boyfriend story finally got somewhere this last episode. I liked the look she gave Frank at the end–realizing that her own addiction to–chaos? I guess-- is probably going to end her up just like him.

Lip got busted for the CC swiper didn’t he? He’s on probation IIRC so he’s got to stay straight.

I thought it was screamingly obvious that he was gay.

That’s a very boring well for them to go to again, so I was hoping that wasn’t the case.

To me, what’s interesting this season is that the two oldest kids (Fiona and Lip) have opportunities to move up out of the horrible situation in which they were raise. And yet, both are close to blowing it.

Fiona of course by sleeping with Mike’s brother, which could end in her losing a good job. (Plus her stupidity in not confessing to the road rage incident, which was mostly not her fault.)

And Lip, by his poor performance in college. In the Onion AV Club discussion of this season’s episodes, several commentators thought that the writers were dumbing down Lip this season, given that he was shown to be an absolute genius in high school. Perhaps the problem is that Lip’s high school wasn’t very challenging so he doesn’t know how to do the work necessary to succeed at a top university. (And yet he was able to get perfect scores on the SAT.)

I’m really sympathetic to him but he doesn’t seem to be spending enough time studying. And I’d expect the school to have more support and mentorship for students such as him. (First in his family to attend college, from the inner city, etc.) But he seems to be on his own.

Hmm, I guess even Frank draws the line at incest. Seriously does Samantha have mental problems or what? :dubious: She’s willing to give half her liver to a random stranger she just met. How’s she going to react when she finds out he’s her father?

No, but I’m wondering if she’ll miscarry. Also it could be misdirection, but I think they’re foreshadowing Debbie getting pregnant. Her relationship with pizza guy is fucked up even by the standards of this show, she wanted to go on the pill, and her slutty friends keep going on about how she can’t get pregnant because she hasn’t gotten her period yet (which isn’t true, it’s rare, but possible for a girl to get pregnant before menarche). Granted they also mentioned Fiona being on the pill, and she did just have unprotected sex (though it looks like he didn’t finish), but that would be obvious and not nearly as interesting.

I don’t think Lip has time to run any kind of scam. He’s being run ragged between work study, class time, and study time. His work & class schedules seem to be clashing badly to.

Self destructive behaviour is a Gallagher family trait. Look at what Ian (still MIA) did; even if he wasn’t West Point material he had a good shot at a ROTC scholarship (or even just waiting and enlisting after high school), but he threw any shot at a military career when he enlisted under Lip’s name. He’ll be lucky to avoid federal prison when he’s found out.

And I can see where Mike’s coming from when he talks about family being family, but Frank is in a whole different league than his brother. He doesn’t have the slightest clue what Fiona’s childhood was like, or what a monster Frank is. I still don’t understand why Fiona’s even allowing him in the house. :dubious: That’s almost as ridiculous as Samantha volunteering half her liver.

Lip went to crappy ghetto schools, and it’s clear he never learned how to study or apply himself. Now he’s surrounded by people who sent to a lot better schools, and had to learn how to study in order to succeed. It’s not surprising he’s ill prepared and totally out of his depth. That happens to a lot of kids who were top students in poor schools. Plus he’s at a large urban university; very easy to fall threw the cracks if you don’t actively seek out resources. To his credit it looks like he’s trying to do everything above board (no cheating on tests, buying papers, etc). And we haven’t seen how he does in STEM classes.

PS Micky trying to fuck female expy of Ian, and not being able to perform in the “top” position was pretty heart-breaking. :frowning: Actually everything about him or his sister is heart-breaking.

I think Frank having a hard time finding someone to break his legs or set him on fire might just be the most unbelievable think on this show. :stuck_out_tongue: Micky’s attempt to unionise the whores kinda backfired, and now Kev’s running a brother upstairs?

I thought last night’s episode was pretty great. I remember thinking: Fiona has to pay in some way-- a realization that she was fucking a version of her dad wasn’t enough. Which is almost funny considering that Frank’s other daughter was literally trying to fuck him before she found out who he was.
I don’t really see a way out of Fiona going to prison.

I also enjoyed Lips and Debbie’s adventure together. It does look like after deciding to rededicate himself to college his family has fucked up his chances.

Well Fiona was right about not deserving nice things. I doubt she was in any real danger of being fired (at least not without severance package & good reference before), but she’s toast now. She’s defiantly her father’s daughter; it’s back to foster care for Debbie, Carl, & Liam. At least Liam’s still young & cute enough to be adopted. I wonder if Ian started the drugs before or after he decided to steal the helicopter (& military-issued underwear :p). And I love how nobody challenged the 13 year old girl until Lip started making a scene. The other crabs are pulling him right back in.

I’ve thought about it and come up with a far fetched theory on how the writers could keep Fiona out of jail. Frank takes the wrap & says that it was his cocaine in exchange for half her liver, and since he’s a prisoner the State of Illinois pays for the transplant. Granted since Fiona actually did some of the cocaine she’d test positive, but let’s just assume the cops either didn’t test her or did it without a warrant & her lawyer get’s it excluded. You got to admit it would’ve far from being the least plausible thing to happen on this show.

I like it!

Unfortunately that would keep Frank in prison for the rest of the show. OTOH, they’ve already set him up to die soon so that’s no big deal.

What’s the state of play re prisoners getting transplants even if they have donors lined up?

Maybe you’re right that Fiona will do that deal with Frank. I mean, Emily Rossum is the lead actor on the show, so I can’t see them sticking her in jail indefinitely (although that would be one way to go with the character). But she is also the official guardian for Liam, Carl and Debbie. So are they going back to foster care? From the point of view of the show, we’ve already done that story (although in the real world, some kids do bounce in and out of the foster care system).

And from Lip’s expression, he was really pissed at her (and rightfully so) for what happened to Liam. So will he drop out of college to take guardianship of his siblings? I kind of hope not, as he had a good shot of succeeding at college. (Actually, all of the older kids had good shots. Fiona blew the good relationship she had with Mike and had Ian just waited, he could have joined the army under his own name.)

I like this theory, but the only thing that keeps me from fully embracing the idea is that Fiona told the emergency workers that it was her coke, which will make it harder for Frank to claim it as his own.

Same theory and same hang-up with it. I think for sure it will come up since they made such a point of her saying it was her coke.

True, and that’s harder to waive away that a positive drug test. And about Ian; at first I just thought he was on drugs, but there’s another possibility. Ian might have inherited his mother’s bipolar disorder. Which sucks, but at least it could stop him from going to federal prison.

As far as the younger siblings I think Debbie has the best shot as long as she avoids getting pregnant (all bets are off if she get’s sucked back into the foster system). I see Carl’s future as being filled with orange jumpsuits and baby mamas. Liam’s still too young to tell.

And it made it in to the police report too. Any theories as to why Mike bailed her out? He’s got to know (or at least suspect) Robbie gave her the coke. And why is Fiona so reluctant to name Robbie? :dubious: It’s not like she has anything left to loose; her job’s gone. I loved that little moment when Lip was looking at his essay smiling, followed immediately by the realization he’s going to have to drop out. Ian better figure a lot in the next couple episodes though.

Could just be part of the “don’t rat” attitude that’s so pervasive in those kinds of neighborhoods.
