I Microwaved a Kiwifruit

As I announced in a previous thread, I have signed up with Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating. The meals come in little wrapped up trays like TV dinners, with a huge label on each with nutritional information. The label obscures the food inside the tray.

So I chose the Chicken Shawarma, and there was a little brown ball in the tray that I took to be a falafel. I mean, it’s Chicken Shawarma, right?

Well, I slapped that sucker in the microwave, and nuked it for three minutes.
Imagine my surprise when I found the falafel to be a kiwifruit! Disappointment oozed through my soul.

Until I tasted it.

It was hot and soft, tangy sweet and delectable. It melted as I sucked at it, yet held together neatly in its skin. Dare I say it was unctuous? Yes, it was kiwi at it’s most decadent.

I highly recommend nuking kiwis.

Cool.

Good grilled too. Once I was just fooling around with the grill and threw on a bunch of cut fruit for fun and made a grilled fruit salad. Huge hit in the house.

huh. that would never have occurred to me. Sounds good, though.

Our neighbors have a huge apple orchard, but they have a small peach orchard as well. When they have ripe peaches I grill them most nights. Slice in half, remove pit, put on grill cut side down. Drizzle with honey when you flip them.

Kiwis, huh. On my list.

I’m not sure sliced kiwis would hold up on the grill. My kiwi was whole, and the texture was very liquidy.

I’m thing I’ll halve a few and grill skin down till warm/hot.

Kiwis don’t explode when microwaved?!? :open_mouth:

Mine didn’t. Maybe poke a hole or two in it like a potato?

But I didn’t poke any holes.

In my experience, potatoes don’t explode without holes in the microwave, either. They just take longer to warm up—and you can get a squeal as the steam finds its own way to release.

Note, I’m not recommending this, per se. Maybe it’s like the water in a perfectly clear glass, where something can go wrong but usually doesn’t.

I like these kinds of fruit because they’re cold, sweet, and juicy. I don’t think I’ll microwave or grill them, but I’ll mention this to less picky eaters who might enjoy that.

I like kiwi but don’t totally enjoy all the little seeds. Do the seeds get softer (or less annoying) when nuked?

Definitely. Didn’t even notice seeds. It was like a drink in a little pouch. Like a smoothie, texture-wise.

Thanks. Definitely going to try this!

This sounds disgusting but your description is so compelling, I’d try it.
