Having finally joined CostCo, I think there may be a few threads like this in my future. I managed to survive my first trip there without buying anything outrageously unhealthy, and ended up splitting some thing with my mom (who was very pleased to get a whole bunch of organic mixed baby greens for practically nothing).

One of my purchases was a 4-lb. box of kiwi. They aren’t quite ripe yet, but Mom didn’t want any of them, so now I have to figure out what do do with 4 lb. of kiwi before they go bad. Most of the recipes I’m finding only call for 3 or 4 kiwi at the most, and quite a number just use a bit of sliced or diced kiwi as a garnish. I suppose I could experiment with kiwi sorbet, but that would involve finding room in my freezer to chill the canister for the ice cream maker.

So who has kiwi recipes? Something that I could use to make a nice-looking dessert for next weekend’s potluck would be nice, but I’m open to suggestions of all sorts.

I would think you would cook a kiwi like any other small bird such as a pidgeon or game hen.

never mind

also thought you may have been referring to New Zealand cuisine

But wouldn’t I have capitalized Kiwi then?

Kiwi sorbet is quite nice. It comes out to a gummy, sticky type texture which is quite different from most other sorbets.

Apart from that, I guess you can just eat them out of hand. I don’t think they’re used very much in cooking.

Thank heaven the OP means kiwifruit! ‘Else there’d be a minute stampede of us few Kiwis out th’ door …

How about some kiwi jam? I’ve never made it but my mom did and it was both pretty and delicious.

They keep for a surprisingly long time in a fridge, especially if not quite ripe yet.

A Kiwi is a bird native to New Zealand, and is a protected species. A kiwifruit, formerly known as the chinese gooseberry, is safe to consume.

Please burn that into your memories.

Well, it’s safe for some of you…I’m allergic, which is awful because I love how they taste.

It’s no use, GuanoLad. They’ll never tack that fruity bit on now. The ad people have made sure of that.

I’m just glad they haven’t called 'em zespris.

OTOH – that would cut down on the confusion and the letters of protest to consulates, no?

[bump]

OK, I’m taking one more shot at this - potluck day has arrived, the apartment is more or less under control, and I have everything cooked except the plov (which will be last-minute - I’ll probably start that around 7 pm) and the mushrooms (which can also be last minute).

So, any more ideas for kiwi, or kiwifruit, or whatever your word of choice is? They are now ripe and in the fridge, and I did buy a pineapple as well - unless I am struck by inspiration, I will probably just cut them up and put them out on a platter, but I’d like to do something fancier.

Fruit pizza.

One tube sugar cookie dough, or homemade.
Flatten into pizza pan, bake until light brown.

Whip one package cream cheese with honey or about 1/2 cup sugar.
Smear onto crust.

Top with lotsa sliced kiwifruit.

Yum.

Well, you could be totally Kiwi, and serve up pavlova, whipped cream, garnished with kiwifruit slices.

Otherwise cut them into segments, maybe serve with yogurt or cream.
