For years I have wanted a personal website. I haven’t registered a domain name yet because I simply can not come up with a clever name.
I understand that it’s likely that all of the fun, witty, sarcastic, clever names have been taken, but I thought I’d give a shout out to fellow dopers for some suggestions. I’d like it to be a clever name that will be good with our email addys...Ruby@blahblahblah.com.
One thing I tell my web students is to pick at least one domain name that is as generic as possible. (Depending on your plan, you can often pick more than one domain name.)
For instance, let’s say you want to sell hats for gerbils. You could get a domain of gerbilhats . com and that might be good, but a few weeks/month/years later you want to sell home baked cookies. Now you have to use a subdomain: cookies.gerbilhats . com
Cookies and gerbils don’t fit particularly well.
If you had created a generic name: ruby . com you could have had two subdomains:
gerbilhats.ruby .com
cookies.ruby . com.
Mind you, you can create up to 100 subdomains, so this is something to consider when creating a domain name.
Does it have to be a .com? I’d stay away from .info and .biz – they scream “spammer!” – but .org has an air of legitimacy. .org domains also are easier to remember compared to the other alternative, .net.
Someone must be homesteading blahblahblah.com. I actually tried it when I posted the OP thinking that it would be damned embarrassing if that url was actually available. :smack:
