I need a domain name.

For years I have wanted a personal website. I haven’t registered a domain name yet because I simply can not come up with a clever name.

I understand that it’s likely that all of the fun, witty, sarcastic, clever names have been taken, but I thought I’d give a shout out to fellow dopers for some suggestions. I’d like it to be a clever name that will be good with our email addys...Ruby@blahblahblah.com.

ofomarkhayyan.com” is available.

That way your e-mail address will be ruby (at) ofomarkhayyan.com

takeyourlovetotown.com” is available
donttakeyourlovetotown.com” is also

sadly “onrails.com” is taken

I was actually going to suggest rubyofftherails.com.

Made. Of. Win.

One thing I tell my web students is to pick at least one domain name that is as generic as possible. (Depending on your plan, you can often pick more than one domain name.)

For instance, let’s say you want to sell hats for gerbils. You could get a domain of gerbilhats . com and that might be good, but a few weeks/month/years later you want to sell home baked cookies. Now you have to use a subdomain: cookies.gerbilhats . com

Cookies and gerbils don’t fit particularly well.

If you had created a generic name: ruby . com you could have had two subdomains:

gerbilhats.ruby .com
cookies.ruby . com.

Mind you, you can create up to 100 subdomains, so this is something to consider when creating a domain name.

Good advice… <thinking>

scubyduby.com

Perfect.

Mind explaining the reference? I’m looking at it, and trying to sound it out in my mind, and I have no idea what ofomarkhayyan is.

Here you go

If I ever started a porn site, it would be called:

oopsitwentoffinmyhand . com

Thanks. I’d vaguely heard of Omar Khayyam, but I didn’t know about the “Rubaiyat” part.

Does it have to be a .com? I’d stay away from .info and .biz – they scream “spammer!” – but .org has an air of legitimacy. .org domains also are easier to remember compared to the other alternative, .net.

How about smashie.org? rubyrubyruby.org? ybur.org?

www.blahblahblah.com appears to still be available. So is www.yaddahyaddahyaddah.com (but you have to put the h’s in yaddah).

Someone must be homesteading blahblahblah.com. I actually tried it when I posted the OP thinking that it would be damned embarrassing if that url was actually available. :smack:
