I need some advice on Australians emigrating to the UK please

My son’s girlfriend is from Sydney and has a 2 year work visa for Britain. She’s halfway through and we’re trying to find out if there’s any way of her staying here permanently. Can she emigrate (she has no distant relatives from the UK) or if they got married, would that allow her to stay?

Well if they were to get married she would defintely be able to stay (unless immigration control decided that the relationship wasn’t genuine, but if it is that’s unlikely) as she would automatically have the right to British citzenship.

The best place to look for other ways is here:

Thanks MC - I think that’s exactly what we need

Well I think you overstate the case MC. If they get married, he will have a right of residency that may or may not allow him to work, and if he stays long enough he may be able to get citizenship. It is most definitely not a case of get married: get citizenship, unless things have been made very much easier since this was a problem for me.

G’day

The best advice I can give Aussies planning to migrate to the UK is “don’t!”. But I guess that takes us off into GD.

Agback

Well, OK, it may not be straighforward as such, but as I have a U.S. friends who married and live here in the U.K. - it has to be possible.

Good luck!
