I can’t think of any other reason someone would start posting much more in 2020 of all years, can you?
This is some of the weakest sauce that has been showing up in the Pit a lot recently. You made a weak argument. @needscoffee pointed it out because, you know, it’s a public message board. That doesn’t make her @mordecaiB’s defense attorney, and the suggestion that everyone should let your weak argument slide because @mordecaiB is loathsome is silly.
Interestingly, this seems to be the mode of anti-vaxxers on facebook. I posted a simple link to a National Public Radio article outlining a scientific study that showed the Delta Covid variant was more infectious and possibly more dangerous. The anti-vaxxer in the discussion flagged it, and my post was hidden for “violating community standards”. A link from NPR about a peer reviewed scientific paper. This seems to be how anti-vaxxers are trying to shut down discussion.
I did consider that COVID-19, being laid off, or even retirement might have given our pittee more free time to spend. The point was, why suddenly decide to spend it here if the moderation is so bad that it scares away new members?
And for the record I’m talking going from 1-2 posts per year average to maybe 35-40 posts in 2020 (he returned in June), then 40 posts in January '21 alone and even more active ever since.
I’m not pitting mordecaiB for being an active poster. Just for arguing in ATMB that the moderation in the past few years has gone to hell and scares away new members.
ETA: (And he is at 889 posts since July of last year, meaning ~850 posts this year. The pace has picked up considerably - something has drawn him back to the SDMB despite his arguments that bad moderation is scaring members away)
OK, I was having a bad day yesterday and I way overreacted to @needscoffee’s post, for which I unconditionally apologize.
I still don’t think my editing substantially changed the meaning of the quote. I did snip the bits where (if you read it charitably) he admitted it was possible he was just confused about what people were talking about (which turned out to be the case). However, I felt that in context that was a snarky rhetorical device rather than a sincere admission of possible error, so I felt justified in snipping it. If mordecai’s intention was to actually to express humility and acknowledge that he was possibly in the wrong…well, he did a very poor job of conveying that tone.
In retrospect it’s clear that mordecai, intentionally or otherwise, moved the goalposts and shifted the conversation from being specifically about SDMB moderation policy to being about society in general. That led to me forgetting which forum we were in and talking past Demon Tree for a few go-rounds in which I was wondering why she was viewing the problem as being so much simpler than it was!
Huh. I looked into flagging your post, just to see what “flagging-a-post-for-violating-community-standards” looked like, and it seems to come up as a DO NOT USE button. Makes me wonder why that button isn’t disabled (but that’s probably a question for ATMB, or Site Feedback, so I won’t ask it here).
On facebook, it apparently just takes one single person to flag a perfectly valid scientific link, and that cues the facebook algorithm to block and hide your post… Until presumably a human being looks at the flag, and deems that the person doing it was an idiot. This process can take weeks/months if ever.
In the meantime, antivaxxers can quickly hide valid scientific links, or anything else they do not like.
I think the guy is headed for a meltdown – I don’t remember seeing him post much until lately, and it seems mostly to be just hostile bullshit. Last month he went completely apeshit on me for what was a fairly minor offense, and then threw a hissyfit because I refused to rise to the bait.
He’s bonkers.
And I have no idea what he means by “Ed approves of mods posting at Giraffe”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him say that. The main policy seems to be that mods and/or admins can’t really control what people post on other boards, I believe. Some people are getting completely paranoid.
I’m not surprised. It seems like all he does is lurk around in ATMB waiting for someone to post so he can jump in to add more complaints about modding.
im surprised him and a few others are still here after the way they treated ed when he asked about what if we made the SDAB a premium thing so he could help restart the column …
