Man, there are a lot of assholes in this thread. Sorry. Bringing up a question is one thing but the flat out arrogance to assume that you KNOW she’s a troll because of these flimsy excuses is completely asinine.
People are crushing her because she’s only posted in her threads? Well, gee, when the Ask The… thread is getting that kind of traction and she’s answering question after question, over 400 in a little over a month, many of them verbose, I think it’s a bit much to say “ok, thanks…now stick around and sift through the other threads for another two hours a night so we know you’re not a troll.” Come on.
Ambivalid, you’re way out of line. And I’d say that to anyone who tells anyone else “You weren’t in love.” Were the other guys in love with her? Don’t know, but telling another person they weren’t in love is, again, so damn arrogant.
Do I think it’s possibleumkay is faking us out? Well, anything is possible, but I don’t believe that it’s the case, and the ‘reasons’ given here are so flimsy as to be comical.
The really sick part is that if umkay does decide to leave since she’s been royally shit on by a large contingent in a few threads through no fault of her own (other than opening herself up to pretty private questions), you’ll all say “See…she was a troll…couldn’t even stick around.” Even though that would be a perfectly normal reaction for a relatively new member to do when attacked by people out of the blue.
Please send me your drivers license, including home address and phone number so that we can verify that you are a real person and not some 90 year old guy who likes to stir shit up. Oh…add your social security number too.
I don’t care who you are…NO ONE should be required to post or provide intimate details to a mod or anyone else to be a member of this board. Why isn’t she doing it? Because she doesn’t answer to you or to anyone else here.
Those of us who believe she’s legit believe so simply because there’s no evidence to the contrary (except some wild conjecture) and some ‘gut feelings.’
Occam’s Razor people…what’s more likely:
Umkay is a quadriplegic who joined to post a question on her mind after seeing that these kinds of questions are often fielded here…then does an ‘ask the’ thread after a member REQUESTED SHE DO ONE, and patiently answers the questions. When she has some medical issues and is absent for a few days, some asshole (My bet is on Gezmo who was banned right after asking a bunch of dumbshit questions in her thread) posts her fake death notice and she is rightfully outraged (Wouldn’t you be?)
OR
Umkay is some guy or girl with extremely intimate knowledge of quadriplegic life, not only about the medical portion, but how she interacts with her carers, the daily routine, little things that very few people would ever think of about how these things work…AND they happen to be extremely witty and charming at the same time…they concoct this elaborate scheme to hook people into being interested, the sort of pull the rug out then restablish themselves quickly and go for the negative attention aspect as well…without (to my knowledge) any contradictions or aspects of life relayed that would make the other quads and paraplegics on the board take notice.
Are both scenarios POSSIBLE? Yes, but the second is far less likely in my eyes. And absolutely lambasting someone for it because you THINK that it can’t be real is just total asshattery.
But the sickest part of all is that Umkay might have found what she thought was a great internet home and got shit on and leaves. I don’t want to be patronizing to somebody with a serious disability but I would think an interesting place to hang out on the internet means much more to a quadraplegic than it does some random joe schmoe that can either post cute kitty pics or easily go out bass fishing instead if he desires.
It is fascinating, isn’t it? I don’t really care about umkay and whether she is ‘real’ or not, but the development of the whole story and the extreme reactions to it on both sides (defenders and deniers) is pretty entertaining to watch. I don’t want to encourage trolling (on the part of notokay or anyone else), but it’s very interesting how that one post has caused so much clamor.
Look, if she wants to hang around here, and post (and shit), she’ll just DO IT. That’s the only way to prove she’s going to be a normal poster, by being one. If she does that, then suspicious, nasty-minded posters like me will have to admit, “Ok, I misjudged her and her situation.”
But if she has another mysterious crisis, where she disappears and doesn’t post or log in for days on end and then we get another note from MMMMI’mseriousthis time telling us that Umkay is at death’s door, and then we hear from her a month or two later, saying “The fuck? I’ve died again?,” then I think you need to confess that you all have been played like a big-mouthed bass by a master fisherman, mkay?
The timing is the evidence to me. As someone noted, this couldn’t have been pulled off if Umkay had just been monitoring the SD while the Notokay person was posting her death notice. You post I died, I log on and say (under my own username) “Bullshit” twelve seconds later, and where’s the joy in that for you? To pull this off, you need me simultaneously to be neither posting or logging in at the same exact time you’re getting everyone’s panties all skrunched up, and that means that either **Umkay **and Notokay were synchronizing watches or it was all a tremendous coincidence. “Tremendous coincidence” is the far less likely scenario.
It’s a tremendous coincidence that some who hadn’t logged on in 5 days didn’t come back until 20 hours after someone posted about her? Wow, you must see some amazing coincidences every day.
Look, if I’m wrong, then, well. Nothing much happens really. If you’re wrong, you’ve berated and spread malicious rumors about someone you don’t know, and who is a pretty cool person.
Don’t know about you, but I’d rather have a ‘you got me’ moment (which has no consequences to me) than be a complete fucking asshole to someone I don’t know simply based on random speculation.
So you’re positing what? That Notokay noticed that Umkay hadn’t logged on for a few days, and was completely certain that she wasn’t viewing the SD without being logged in, or wasn’t going to log in any time soon, and so decided to post a sensational thread that **Umkay **could blow out of the water in about fifteen seconds?
Would you like to buy a bridge? I have a nice one for sale, pretty cheap.
Also, did you know that the word “gullible” is not in the dictionary?
What’s the risk to notokay? Umkay has posted pretty regularly in the evenings Pacific time… Umkay hadn’t logged in since June 17 (visible in her profile). If someone wanted to be a jerk, what’s the risk to trying it then? If she comes back on quickly…oh well, didn’t work, but what are the chances she would come back and log in right after he posted that given that she’d been absent for nearly a week?
If I’m gullible, what does that make you? You’re SO SURE of this that you’re willing to shit on someone else who, if you’re wrong, did nothing more than have a medical emergency and have an asshole take advantage of that fact. So, you may not be gullible, but you’re something else indeed.
As to what I’m positing, I’m positing that Gezmo is NotOkay…he was banned shortly after asking a bunch of inane questions in umkay’s thread, part way into her absence. He was banned for trolling. I think it’s not unlikely that he decided to do this as a last aka of revenge on the board.
Um…thats what Umkay said upon returning. Read my post again. I didn’t say that notOkay knew she was having an emergency, I said he knew she hadn’t logged on in 5 days.
I said that I’d these people calling troll are wrong, they’ve shit on someone who did nothing more than have a medical emergency.
I say again, I’d rather be a little gullible than be a total dick to someone who is getting all sorts of shit because she was in the hospital.
Does anyone else who posts here have to prove they are who they say they are??? Or they aren’t who they say they aren’t (I’m still not so sure about a certain Doper and a woolly mishap :p).
I mean, hell, I’ve posted about all sorts of things here that could be complete and utter bullshit, and I have zero intention of making any effort to prove I am who I say I am.
The idea that anyone should have to prove their identity is beyond absurd.
As someone said in a Pit thread, Umkay will either stick around and with months of posting, prove her mettle, or will disappear in which case people can conclude she either went away in disgust, or decided the “hoax” was no longer fun. Either way, “so what?”. I’ve seen others post and stick around after being accused of such pranking, and their continued presence (and consistent story) certainly supports that they are what they claim to be.
Umkay, I don’t think you’re a faker. If you are, you’re a DAMN good one :).
You do understand how it’s possible to read the SD without being logged in, don’t you?
I’m not saying that I KNOW them to be one and the same, just that that’s the likeliest explanation to me, given the timing. If **Unkay **went much longer without logging in, the outcry that **Notokay **had disappeared without giving us funeral details, as offered, would have set off most people’s bullshit-detectors, and if she had logged on much sooner, it wouldn’t have been as much fun. The hoax was played for about the maximum possible time, if my thesis is correct.
Anyone can see the last time someone logged in by looking at their profile. The last 10 or 15 posts in the thread were all about her not having logged in for several days and expressing growing concern day by day.
Someone who was banned for trolling a few hours later posted several times right in the middle of that. It was pretty evident to anyone who opened the thread that she hadn’t posted in several days and many were watching the thread waiting for her to return. It would have required no synchronization at all for the same troll to come right back after being banned with a new account and make a single post in the thread. Where does all that fall on the plausibility meter?
Who is more gullible, someone who takes **umkay **at her word for lack of any reason not to and nothing to lose for doing so, or someone who entertains a known, real troll by making big wavey hand motions and drama and starting a public witch hunt?
