What, you’d rather have them moping around in here?
As far as the film goes:
I believe the entire thing to be fiction. Doesn’t make the story any less affecting though.
Is that what you’re referring to?
Yes. That is what I was referring to. Loved the film.
It’s entirely possible I’ve gone crazy, but I knew that part was a joke. And while I’m sure MOL’s hooha is a fine specimen I have no desire to see it propped up anywhere
Anywhere? I’m sure you can think of someplace it would look nice. Above the mantle perhaps?
I say we let it go freerange.
Was Umkay really that good at it though? I think he (or she) should have been able to string the board along for months, or even years. What Umkay has is the willingness to devote hours and hours to his lie, (which is not a skill), and the desire to do so, coupled with decent writing skills. I think a good percent of the posters on this board could pull off the same hoax at least just as well, and probably better, if they had nothing better to do with their time, and they actually for some reason wanted to.
I think hoaxer trolls that are at all successful get too much credit, because they are rare, but the reason they are rare is because the majority of trolls are too stupid to be good at it, and people who are smart enough to be able to pull it off just tend to have better things to do with their time.
You know who else had “rampant skepticalness”?? HIT-- oh wait… nm.
As far as the gullibility vs. asshole debate goes, I find it’s most convenient to be a gullible asshole.
It went for like 110 posts before it was locked, so…it was pretty successful.
Or, an asshole gull.
And someone joining a message board is a bit less out of the blue, but it’s not totally different. So perhaps you see the analogy I am attempt to make here.
I don’t recall saying anybody shouldn’t post here.
Neither am I.
Like I wrote earlier, I am not saying a person like that couldn’t exist. It’s just that skepticism is called for, particularly when people make a series of remarkable claims about themselves (all phrased, of course, under cover of a ridiculously sparkly personality). Possible and plausible are not the same thing, and there are degrees of plausibility.
Well, if you’re gonna lie about what I said and all, then I guess that makes you no better or worse than what I’ve come to expect.
Put me down as another fascinated onlooker. My congratulations to all involved.
To add- I hate to see people falsely accused of lying. That’s certainly happened before, and I’d say it’s as much a staple of the message board thing as the actual liars are. So I’m not saying it’s OK to call someone a liar whenever they claim anything out of the ordinary. But an open mind is called for, and that means considering the possibility that someone with a fantastic story to tell is just telling a story.
You guys…
:*-)
*We made something beautiful here. *
I’m actually leaning towards umkay being a Pretender (or Poseur) on the DPW spectrum Ambivalid mentioned. In which case umkay isn’t really in the category of “troll”, though still in the broader classification of “pisses people off”.
Sheep lie!
Trolling in the sense of manipulating people to produce an emotional response, perhaps, but not just to irritate or upset them. Which seems kind of convoluted compared to a term like “liar.”
Better than the average troll/pretender, with signs that this person is learning and improving. For example: during the first “medical emergency” absence umkay discovered Ambivalid was checking up on her logging in, so during the second such absence she either stayed away completely or monitored the board in an unlogged state.
We don’t know how old this person is, or how long they’ve been doing this, or how many times. Nor do we know what, exactly, umkay/sezyoo gets out of this stunt. Those would be interesting things to know, but I don’t see how we can obtain that knowledge.
Goddamn I was hoping someone would ask for a break down of the first ten or so pages of this thread so I could post this relevant summary.
Oh well.
