I am just really glad to have been a part of all of this. Yes, I believed umkay’s story (not the Notokay thing though), and I really enjoyed the thread. I remember someone got some good advice and encouragement to fight for better treatment for a loved one who had suffered a paralyzing injury, so that’s good too. I learned a lot about quadripalegia, and it was a blast.
None of that is lessened by the fact that it was just a troll this whole time. Most useful troll in message board history, I’d have to say. He/she may have saved someone’s life by inspiring one poster to advocate for better health care for their family member. That’s pretty awesome.
Also, please don’t take this as me saying that this excuses or makes up for the trolling. I’m definitely not saying that. A troll is a troll and umkay deserves to be banned and hated for years to come, and to serve as an example to everyone why you shouldn’t be so trusting.
Thanks to everyone with sensitive bullshit meters, and thanks for all the great laughs. I definitely have a few new “favorite posters” thanks to this thread and the outing of umkay. Overall, I couldn’t get better entertainment out of a 50 dollar video game or a 10 dollar movie ticket.

I don’t think this person was really a troll; not in the typical sense. This was a “pretender” from the DPW spectrum (devotees, pretenders and wannabees). This is someone who wants, so very badly, to be a quadriplegic that it becomes their life. Now in order to be a good “pretender”, a person must become familiar with everything conceivable about the day-to-day goings-on related to the particular disability they are faking. Even down to the most mundane, miniscule detail. It is in this sense that a pretender can actually be more knowledgeable about the specific information about their disabilities than even some real disabled people. They’ve actually sought the info out and studied in, consumed it, and have to keep it constantly in the forefront.
I wonder what this person, sez-kay, is like in real life. I wonder how extensively the pretending carries over. Does (s)he (I actually do think this is a woman) use a wheelchair? Pretending to be quadriplegic would seem to be mighty difficult in real life, most pretenders that I’ve read about have been paraplegic pretenders. But the internet gives limitless pretend possibilities; as evidenced by her multiple hoaxes on multiple boards. I’m sure there’s more.
But at the core, with all the DPW (yes, even devotees), of course is an illness. These pretenders really do feel happiness when they live as disabled. They feel as though it is the way they are meant to live. Wannabees actually take this a step further and mutilate their bodies in order to permanently disable themselves. So I don’t think “hate” is the right thing to feel here; not at all. Perhaps empathy and a little pity; these people are suffering through some fucked up psychological trauma of some sort and I can only think they hurt.
