I read somewhere, possibly one of those celebrity gossip boards, that Christopher Reeve’s care after his accident was so expensive that it exhausted his wealth and that his family was being supported by actor friends such as Robin Williams.
No, this is just speculation and for our purposes it doesn’t matter.
If that’s what it was. I understand the reasoning but I don’t think trolls usually pull the plug on their schemes and then say the whole thing was fake. The whole thing only diminished umkay’s credibility and made people more suspicious of her. It certainly accelerated the ban. So it’s possible the NotOkay thing was an unusually complex piece of trolling, but my inclination is that it was not.
Yup. Right before the end she actually did ask us to remove a few “identifying” details from her posts, and we said no. This is one of the reasons I’m glad we don’t let people delete their own posts.

Nah. I just thought it was funny and I thought the board might as well. Marley23 reminded me that I sent the PM so I thought I would share. I got suckered but I have a sense of humor about it, have a good time at my expense I did.

The use of ‘over the moon’ makes me think they’re from the UK or maybe Australia. I don’t know if the expression is common in Canada, but when heard in the US it has almost always been someone British or Australian IME.
While searching for similarities on the mommy board threads I noticed that “KWIM” also seems to be much more common on UK based boards.
I would assume that the mods verified her IP was in Southern California somewhere very early in the thread, and I just wrote it off to probably having friends or family that used the expression.
For what it’s worth, I am Californian (although I lived in Boston for slightly longer than I lived in California), and I use both of those expressions pretty regularly. I do have the use of all four limbs, though.
Someone who has trolled/defrauded/whatevered multiple message boards would know that mods can easily find out if you’re lying about something as basic as your location.
In fact umkay even knew enough to make up a story about posting with a mobile phone. In hindsight that might be the most absurd element of the story- picture a quadriplegic out on the town posting to a message board.
Okay so I was on vacation for a while and didn’t get to see the fallout of this fascinating story. Would someone be kind enough to link to the threads where it became apparent that Umkay was a fake? Or at least sum up the story like a “Reader’s Digest” version? Only if it’s not a pain in your asses. Trolls are fascinating creatures…
Right here in this very thread. Sarahbellum1976 found the other board where umkay was posting before May. Around page 10 or so…
Reader’s Digest version: after she already took a week off and people got worried, umkay came back and explained her absence with a medical reason that could potentially kill her if untreated. She then went offline for another week and on Friday a troll (maybe herself, maybe not) posted as her brother announcing her death (“Umkay has passed”). People were posting 1 1/2 pages of condolences before she showed up again, disproving her “death” (“the FUCK!?”).
Then this thread was opened, where soon people starting accusing her of trolling. Some people (including me) jumped to her defense, before Sarahbellum1976 came along with her research. umkay never posted again after that revelation and was banned a couple of hours later.
One footnote, it was actually Splatterpunk’s research, not mine.
And she didn’t get banned until the next day. She made her “I’m for real!” post AFTER the other message board had been found - comedy gold! - but BEFORE we’d posted about it over here.
Footnote to Sarabellum’s footnote:
choie, Sarabellum, Salambo*, Ugly Ripe Tomato, coolbyrne and hajario all spent a good deal of time scouring sezyoo’s posts looking for similarities between the two trolls’ stories/posting styles.
There was some bit of discussion (on another board) as to whether or not it was conclusive that the two posters were the same before the information was dumped here.
*Salambo actually stumbled onto the mommy board about the same time I did, and had the same suspicions.
