Agreed.
That’s the best thing about admitting you don’t know something. It’s impossible to be wrong.

Which, you’ll recall, was a lone domestic RW weapons-fetishizing nutcase.
Who knows? The person or people who would do something like this are fucking crazy. I don’t know what goes on in their heads. It’s only you and those like you who seem to think you do.
They do blow stuff up and kill people. Yes. It’s been in the news you know.
Yes, after your posts insisting it was the Tea Party.
What conclusions have I jumped to? I admit I have no idea who did this. It could have been right wingers or it could have been foreign terrorists or someone else.
Don’t try to rope me in to assuming I know who did this. It’s you who simply know who did it based on nothing.
Which … turned out to be the work of a right-wing anti-abortion nutjob.
Certainly. But speculating is only natural, as is wondering if the anti-government terrorists who caused some previous attacks have done so again.
I’m sure there are plenty of Boston police looking into the symbology behind this as we speak
It’s way too early too throw out anything other than guesses about who’s responsible. I tend to believe it was a domestic militia-type just because of the Patriots Day connection, but I’m not stupid enough to say this is anything more than a hunch.
Actually, I bet they aren’t so much trying to read the tea leaves of the importance of the date of the attack as they are, you know, running an investigation.
I bet they’re even doing fingerprints and stuff.
Sorry to be so snarky, Ludovic. But do you really think the FBI and police investigating this give a shit about “the symbology” of anything? They’re going to catch the person(s) responsible by doing an investigation and following the leads and evidence that they have. Or at least I hope that’s what they are doing!
As the chief proponent (on these boards) of the theory that it was AQ, this is my biggest misgiving as well.
Also, I think you mean militate, not mitigate.
Then why bring it up?
That’s a common, easy way to avoid trying to understand the thinking of someone who does something horrendous. It also does the opposite of fighting ignorance. This action was done by someone for some reasons that made sense to them, and it would help us all to try to understand what that might be.
So do all manner of terrorist organizations around the world. Yet you’re singling out the most prominent one that has *denied *it. Why?
Quote or retract. Now. :dubious: Or run away like the cowardly, hate-filled little liar you are; your choice.
That this was Al Qaeda, and that it couldn’t have been one of your precious gunstroking teabaggers. Need cites, or do you know how to scroll up?
You’re sure who didn’t, though, despite the circumstantial evidence. It’s no secret why, not to the rest of us, anyway.
SSSSSSSSSSymbolism.

The Oklahoma City Bombing was timed to coincide with the date of the last day of the siege at Waco

The Columbine Shootings were timed to coincide with the Oklahoma City bombings (April 19th) but they took longer to make all their bombs so they moved the date to April 20th. Harris & Klebold both spoke of outdoing McVeigh & Nichols (fortunately, their bombs didn’t explode).
A proper investigation includes both gathering forensic evidence and questioning the circumstances of the event. In this case, one of those circumstances is that it happened on Tax Day. Another circumstance is that it happened in Boston, a city historically associated with tax revolts.
It may turn out that those circumstances are coincidental - but we won’t know unless someone investigates. It would be irresponsible of the investigators to ignore those circumstances because some people don’t like the implications.
This is the closest I’ve ever been to something like this. We live about 3 hours away from Boston, which, granted, is hardly next door. Some acquaintances of mine were running the marathon, and were at 25.5 miles when the bombs went off. They’re all fine. Still.
This is, quite obviously, a tragedy that will mar the memories of many people. Children will remember this in horror. Parents will wince in pain and cry in sympathy at the very idea that an 8-year-old little guy died because some person or people decided that violence was an answer to something.
These were anti-personnel weapons.
They were designed to maim humans, not to bring down a structure. Whoever is responsible for this reprehensible act should NOT have whatever idea they wish to trumpet be brought to the forefront of our media consciousness. We should ignore them. Find them, prosecute them and then punish them by shunning them and whatever ideas they thought were worth more than the lives of the three people who have died.
Hrrrrrrr…
It was probably obese Midwestern evangelical theocrats. They don’t like all this exercising- it causes people to be fit and hyper-ambulatory, which doesn’t just mean they can get away from church on foot- under the right circumstances it could lead to dancing. Plus gay people aren’t banned from running the race, in public, in those little shorts! And is the event dedicated to Jesus? No. Should be, but it isn’t, and now we’ve learned our lesson.
There, I said it.
Oh, of course, it could turn out to be pure mischief, with no more political agenda than the 1982 poisoned-Tylenol murders.
But, nobody really believes that.
But seriously, I recall reading that the FBI had named ‘right wing extremists’ as the #1 terrorist threat to America. Speculating it might have been them isn’t unreasonable simply because they are literally at the top of the list. But what do we have to substantiate that with? Next to nothing.
My first thought was that it was some Pakistani pissed off about the drone strikes in his country, since that would at least make some kind of sense. But who knows?
Of course, on some level your body is saying, “I can stop running now?!”
It was an example. Nothing more. It could have been anyone who did this attack. My position on that has been consistent.
Admitting you don’t know something isn’t the opposite of fighting ignorance. Making a guess based on your existing biases is the opposite of fighting ignorance though.
Why not? I’m simply pointing out that just like it could be a domestic right winger, it could also be an international terrorist group. It’s not that hard a concept to follow.
I already did once upthread, but here you go again:
I have never said it couldn’t have been a domestic, Tea Party type who is responsible for this. So of course you have no cite for me saying that.
I also haven’t said it was Al Qaeda. I’ve said it could be them, but that’s it.
Reading for comprehension doesn’t seem to be your strong suit, does it?
If this turns out to be the act of a random nut job with no specific political affiliation but a psychosis driven hatred for the government some of you will be falling all over yourself saying “See Teaparty!”
