Reports surfacing indicate an “improvised device”, which is usually code for clumsy crude and amateurish. Which leans against such groups as AlQ or the IRA or any of dozens of vicious assholes who know what they are about when it comes to mayhem.
What puzzles me most is the lack of any claim for responsibility. If this is some group of AlQ wannabes, how come Al-Jazz doesn’t know anything more than we do? Tea Party? Which one, there’s about fifty, squabbling over whether Obama is a Muslim socialist or an atheist Communist.
All we know is evil, stupid, violent and inept. Which only lets out the Amish. Got this much of a wild assed guess: its somebody we never heard of before.

No claim for responsibility lends itself quite nicely to the lone nut theory – of which fucked up stripe remains to be seen. I saw someone on the TeeVee this morning making the point that lone (almost lone, I suppose) nut Timothy McVeigh didn’t wave his hands and jump up and down shouting, “I did it! It was me!.” He was caught while trying to get away with it.
Grim bit of humor. News report I was reading felt it needful to explain what a “pressure cooker” was, for people who have never put up a batch of preserves.
And “low grade explosives”. Again, points to unsophisticated and unconnected. Don’t know where to get the real stuff.
That particular form of irresponsibility has been accepted as official government policy.
Yeah, I think if 2 or more days go by with no group claiming responsibility, that means lone nutter is the likely culprit. That doesn’t rule out Islamist, as there are certainly lone nutters of that type as well as of the “survivalist/right-winger” type. Or maybe even someone disgruntled at the marathon itself-- don’t laugh, but you do have to qualify to run it.
If someone put a gun to my head and said make a guess, I’d probably go for the right-wing lone nutter type, but I wouldn’t be too confident about that.

Or sophisticated terrorists who realize that underground sources with access to serious munitions or explosives are FBI agents as often as not. That seems to be how half the foiled plots have ended in the last ten years. If I were a sophisticated terrorist, I’d be very nervous about accepting any help from outside sources.
Basically, we don’t know anything right now. We’ve got so few pieces of the puzzle that you can configure them to suggest any picture you want.

And if its anti-government of the occupy type? Or sovereign citizen? Just as likely. The Tea Party is in no way possible a terrorist organization. AlQ obviously is.
I would not exactly call AlQ professionals. It’s a loosely affiliated group, many self taught. They use what they can get their hands on. Sometimes it’s crude. Sometimes they are morons and blow themselves up. Nothing revealed so far excludes any group at all.
In my mind it doesn’t matter if it was some heartbroken dude trying to get back at his girlfriend or a sophisticated attack by a well-organized and funded known terrorist organization, this was an act of terrorism.
Wait, What?! Occupy was anti-government? I thought they were anti-bank and anti-Wall Street?
The only thing I can think of that would make this not terrorism is if someone had been targeting a particular individual. But that seems highly unlikely as this would be a terribly inefficient and inaccurate way to do that.

My wild ass guess would be the odds of it being a Tea Party OK city type at less than 50%, so betting against it is not certain but it has an expected rate of return of >1.
